Students earn 4.5 SLU units upon successful completion of the India program.
Credits earned on the program are considered resident credits and grades are
averaged in the student's cumulative GPA. Students must take all four courses.
Students must be prepared to do a significant amount of reading to prepare
for India during the spring semester and summer preceding their participation
in the program.
Students earn the following 4.5 credits:
Hindi 101: Reading, writing and conversational skills. (1.5 units)
History 250: The culture and history of India prior to Independence in 1947. (1 unit)
Anthropology 227: Society, politics and economy of contemporary India. (1 unit)
Independent fieldwork project: The student develops a project idea in consultation with the home-campus NYSICCSI faculty representative and, often, with the student's major advisor, to take advantage of resources available in India , and culminating in a substantial written paper. The emphasis is on field work, not merely library research. The student does preparatory reading and library research in the spring and summer. During the semester in India , the program director and Indian resource people provide advice and give feedback at various stages of the project. The proposal must be approved by the appropriate department prior to the beginning of the program. The program director assesses the final project and determines the final grade. (1 unit)
"The independent project is an invaluable part of
the program, as it forced me to make my own contacts, do field work, etc.
It was good for me to do work on my own. . . "
