St. Lawrence University
Denmark Program
Curriculum and Credit
St. Lawrence students take FIVE courses per semester. All SLU participants
MUST take Danish as one of their five courses.
The academic and the cross-cultural experiences are closely integrated and
mutually enriching. DIS organizes its courses into academic programs.
Each program is rewarding and demanding in terms of academic rigor,
workload and grading policy. Each program includes a set of integrated study tours in Denmark and Europe.
Students choose one of the following programs. Most of the programs
have a required core course(s). A
student's choice of a particular core course automatically enrolls the student
in the corresponding program. Students cannot take the core courses from two
different programs.
DIS Programs
Students can view the DIS
Programs on the DIS web site. These will link
them to specific courses and syllabi. Below are short descriptions.
All St. Lawrence University students take Danish. The remaining
courses are selected from those offered in the various programs, providing
that the student has taken any required prerequisite, there are no conflicts
of schedule, and it is not the core course for another program.
- Communication and Mass Media
The core course is "News Media in Transition "
- European Culture and History
There is no core course for this program. It allows students to take a wide range of courses in the humanities.
- European Politics and Society
The prerequisites include an introductory course in government plus a course in international relations or comparative politics. The core course is “European Politics: The European Union”
- International Business and Economics
The prerequisites for the courses are ECON 251 and 252. Required core course is "Doing Business in the European Union"
- Marine and Environmental Biology
The courses are designed for students of general biology, ecology and environmental science. The prerequisites are one year of biology and one year of chemistry at the university level. The core COURSES are "Marine Biology of European Coastal Waters"
and "Ecology and Human Impact in the North and Baltic Seas."
- Medical Practice and Policy
Limited enrollment course. The prerequisites for any of the biology programs are one year of biology, including lab experience,
and one semester of chemistry at the university level. The program is oriented towards serious students with a strong, documented interest in medicine.
The student should notify SLU Center International and Intercultural Studies (CIIS) of his/her interest in this program immediately after acceptance. Students enrolling in
MPP must take the core course 'Human Health and Disease: A Clinical Approach.'
- Migration and Multiculturalism
The core course for this program is "Cross-Cultural Encounters in a European Context"
- Molecular Biology and Biotechnology
The prerequisites are one year of biology and one year of chemistry at the university level. Further, you must have taken an introductory course in molecular biology OR completed cell biology and/or genetics at SLU. The core course for fall is Metabolic Engineering and Functional Genomics (6 credits). The core course for spring is Bioinformatics (6 credits).
- Pre-Architecture and Design
The prerequisite for the program is a drawing course. You must either send or bring with you to Copenhagen two design projects from previous studies in your major field of study. You may bring them in any form you prefer (digitally, photocopies, portfolios, etc.). Required core course is Architecture Foundations Studio.
This program is intended for students who have a documented background in Fine Arts or Studio
Arts.
- Psychology and Child Development
The core courses are either "Children in a Multicultural Context" (both the theory course and practicum) or "Children with Special Needs" (both the theory course and the practicum).
- Comparative Field Project Option
Comparative Field Project (CFP) seminars are an innovative 3-credit option
offering strong students the opportunity to do group research in Copenhagen and in another European city during
part of the midterm travel break.
The mid-semester field component of the CFP, during which you collect data
for the final project, is embedded in a project seminar in which the project
groups prepare for the project with the DIS instructor during the first half
of the semester and elaborate and present their findings in the second half.
The exact form of the report may vary, but it must demonstrate an underlying
comparative and analytical approach.
Please see descriptions and syllabi for the CFP courses and co-requiste courses. Students are granted a partial travel stipend of $500 to offset some travel costs associated with research and travel during the mid-semester break.
Credit
Credits earned in Denmark are considered resident credits; therefore, no
special residency waivers are required, nor is there any transfer of credit.
Each course unit at St. Lawrence is 3.6 credits; each course at DIS is
3 credits. Therefore, students
must take FIVE 3-credit
courses per semester while participating in the DIS Program. One of the
5 courses must be Danish. The DIS letter
grades (with - and +) are averaged into each student's cumulative
St. Lawrence G.P.A. Please see the DIS Catalog for grade conversions.
While all courses taught in the DIS Program have been approved for St. Lawrence
credit, some departments may limit the number of courses taken abroad that
may count toward a major, or they may have other regulations about how such
courses fit into a major. Students must, therefore, confer with their
advisors and department chairpersons well in advance of going abroad in order
to plan their academic programs and avoid problems.
