Completed applications for fall semester must be submitted to the Center of International
and Intercultural Studies by February 20. Applications for spring semester
must be submitted by September 25. The University of Kansas makes the final selection decision.
To be eligible for the San José program, students must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA and a 3.0 in their Spanish classes. There is very little flexibility with this requirement because admission to UCR courses is based on GPA: the higher one’s GPA, the higher one’s registration priority. Students must have completed the equivalent of 5 semesters of college Spanish (Spanish 201 at SLU) prior to participation.
Admission to the program is based on the quality of application. Candidates must present a coherent academic rationale for participation in the Costa Rica Program and a record of academic performance that demonstrates ability to meet the challenges of off-campus study. The selection committee considers closely the candidate's rationale for participation and academic record as a whole. Candidates for the Costa Rica Program must also present evidence of maturity, responsibility and cultural sensitivity.
Students currently on disciplinary, social, or academic probation are not eligible to apply for, or participate in, this program or any other SLU program. In addition, students with outstanding disciplinary fines, service hours and/or education program requirements are not eligible to participate in the program.
