Introduction

St. Lawrence University students can study in China for either fall or spring semester through the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) program in Shanghai. The CIEE Study Center is located at East China Normal University, which is centrally located. The approximately 100 program participants, from diverse American colleges and universities, apply for one of three programs offered by CIEE in Shanghai:

• China in a Global Context provides students a deeper understanding of China as it emerges to take a more influential role in world affairs. (Standard or accelerated language track)
• Business, Language and Culture explores China's role in the global market. (Standard or accelerated language track)
• Advanced Chinese Studies is for students who have completed 2 years of Chinese and want to hone their language skills

Shanghai -- China's largest city -- is a dynamic city, revealing the forces of economic globalization. It is at the leading edge of economic and cultural change in China and, therefore, is the perfect locale from which to observe the interplay of various forces from within China and from the international community. The modernization and economic development which China has been experiencing can easily be witnessed in this vibrant and cosmopolitan city although those in search of old Shanghai can still find remnants of its magnificent past.
