Cost, Financial Aid, and Insurance

Shanghai from Jin Mao TowerCost
The cost for the semester program is equal to St. Lawrence University's semester charges (in 2007-8, $22,217.50). This covers tuition, housing, meals, orientation, cultural activities, local excursions, field trips, insurance, and visa fees. It does not cover airfare (approximately $1,500), passport fees, local transportation and personal expenses.

Students will receive a meal stipend, which they can use for restaurant or home-cooked meals. CIEE indicates that students spend approximately $1,500 per semester on personal expenses (including entertainment) and approximately $50 for books and supplies.

Students bring additional money to cover personal expenses such as more elaborate meals out, weekend and break travel, gifts, and incidentals. The amount a student "needs" depends on the kinds of weekend travel he/she arranges.

A non-refundable first payment of $500 is to be made upon acceptance. The remaining sum must be paid upon receipt of bills from St. Lawrence University. Participants in a program will have incurred responsibility for the full cost once they have formally accepted enrollment. Refunds will be made in accordance with the policy outlined in the St. Lawrence catalog, minus any money that has been paid out on behalf of the student.

Financial Aid
The SLU/CIEE Shanghai program is considered a regular St. Lawrence Program; therefore, financial aid for St. Lawrence students is automatically applied. There are travel scholarships available to SLU students to help pay for airfare to and from the program as well as grants to help finance students' research projects.

Insurance
The St. Lawrence University Accident and Sickness Insurance provides worldwide coverage and will offer the same benefits overseas that a student would receive on campus or in the U.S. Students may choose to have their own insurance or be covered under their family's plan. If students do not purchase the St. Lawrence insurance, proof of coverage by another insurance plan is required.

Students who have had the accident insurance requirement waived on the basis of family coverage should consult with their family or insurance advisor to determine whether their coverage is worldwide. If not, they should purchase the St. Lawrence University coverage. In addition, the CIEE insurance -- included in the cost of the program -- includes basic insurance coverage when traveling outside the United States.
