Eligibility


Studying in Shanghai, China is an opportunity open to sophomore, junior and senior students with appropriate academic preparation, motivation, and an interest in China. Students are introduced to Chinese language, culture, history, and politics.

Applicants for the Shanghai programs must take a course on campus in Asian studies, Chinese language or a course in economics, government, or history, which provides relevant background for this program. Those interested in participating in the Advanced Chinese Studies must have completed two years of Chinese. There is no language prerequisite for the Global Context or Business, Language and Culture Programs. Students take Chinese language courses during on the program.

Admission to the program is based on the quality of application. Candidates must present a coherent academic rationale for participation in the Shanghai Program and a record of academic performance that demonstrates ability to meet the challenges of off-campus study. Students should have at least a 2.8 GPA. Applicants below a 2.75 GPA cannot be considered. This is a requirement of CIEE.

In addition, the selection committee considers closely the candidate's rationale for participation and academic record as a whole. Candidates for the Shanghai Program must also present evidence of maturity, responsibility, and cultural sensitivity.

Students currently on disciplinary, social, or academic probation are not eligible to apply for, or participate in, this program or any other SLU program. In addition, students with outstanding disciplinary fines, service hours and/or education program requirements are not eligible to participate in the program.

Application and Acceptance

Completed applications for the Shanghai Program must be submitted to the SLU Center for International and Intercultural Studies (CIIS) by September 25 for Spring Semester; February 20 for Fall Semester. Normally, decision letters are sent out about a month after the application deadline.

Students who are not accepted for off-campus study have one week from notification of the decision to file an appeal through the CIIS. A student must provide additional information that was not considered in the original application. Students who wish to appeal a negative decision must first meet with the Director for Off-Campus Programs.
