Vienna Program

Introduction

Apt. Block No. 38 (1899), Otto Wagner, Architect We chose Vienna -- of all German-speaking university cities -- as the site of our Austria Program for its rich cultural heritage, its historical importance, its geographic location between eastern and western Europe, and for the facilities of the Austro-American Institute of Education. Once the capital of the vast Austro-Hungarian Empire, Vienna is a natural place in which to study European history, art and architecture.

Today, Austria is a much smaller nation, but it is still strategically located. Constitutionally neutral, it stands at the political, geographical, and cultural crossroads of eastern and western Europe. The city's reputation in music and psychology is well known and well deserved. Each course taught in the program makes use of the unique environment Vienna affords. Vienna and its immediate surroundings also provide almost limitless opportunities for recreation and entertainment, from hiking and skiing to popular music and local folk festivals.
