Cost
The basic charge for the semester will be the same as the comprehensive fee
for the semester at St. Lawrence (in 2007-08, $22,217.50). This cost includes
tuition, room and board, fees associated with subjects (labs, etc), student
fees and orientation. The fee does not cover transportation to Australia,
passport ($97) and visa (approximately $430) fees, books, health
insurance (approximately $150), or travel costs within Australia.
Information is included in the program application on travel scholarships - intended to help defray the cost of the airfare to Australia.
Students receive $800 from St. Lawrence University a couple of weeks before they depart for Australia. The main purpose of the money is for students to travel and learn more about Australia while they are there. In the past, students have used this money to travel within Australia, to become SCUBA certified, to hike Hinchinbrook Island and Mt. Bartle Frere, and to travel outside Australia (to SE Asia, New Zealand, or Bali). The Hinchinbrook hike, which normally takes 3 - 4 days, is very popular and reservations must be made months in advance. Students can explore the Great Barrier Reef by snorkeling or SCUBA diving.
A small part of this money is intended to help with the costs of "settling in," which vary from college to college. We envision a $500/$300 split, with $500 for cultural enrichment and travel, and $300 for payment of your JCU student association membership fee upon arrival, for "settling in" costs and on-campus recreational activities.
A non-refundable first payment of $500 is to be made upon acceptance. The remaining sum must be paid upon receipt of bills from St. Lawrence University. Participants in the program will have incurred responsibility for the full cost once they have formally accepted enrollment. Refunds will be made in accordance with the policy outlined in the St. Lawrence catalog, minus any money that has been paid out on behalf of the student.
Financial Aid
The SLU/JCU program is considered a regular St. Lawrence Program; therefore,
financial aid for St. Lawrence students is automatically applied.
There are travel funds available to SLU students to help pay for airfare to and from the program as well as grants to help finance students' research projects. Visit the Center for International and Intercultural Studies for more information.
Insurance
All students are required to have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) through
James Cook University before they are issued a visa. Students can expect to pay approximately $150 for this health coverage. In addition, students may
want to continue their St. Lawrence University Accident and Sickness Insurance,
which provides worldwide coverage and offers the same benefits overseas that
a St. Lawrence student would receive on campus. Students also receive basic
insurance coverage through the International Student Identity Card (ISIC).
