St. Andrew's Society of the State of New York Scholarships

The Saint Andrew's Society of the State of New York has provided over 120 graduate scholarships to promote cuultural interchange and goodwill between Scotland and the United States since 1960. The following outlines eligibility and selection criteria for our 2007/2008 scholarships:

  • Senior undergraduate student who will obtain a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the Spring of 2007 and can demonstrate the significance of studying in Scotland. Proof of application to their selected school will be required for finalists.

  • Candidates should possess qualifications which will enable them to be good ambassadors for the United States while in Scotland. The basis for selection shall include the student's: (1) academic achievement; (2) extracurricular activities; (3) financial need; (4) statement of personal objectivs; (5) some Scottish descent; and (6) proof of US Citizenship.

  • Only one applicant shall be considered from each institution per year. Preference will be given to candidates who have not previously studied in the United Kingdom. Candidates must reside or attend school within 250 miles of New York State.

  • Two letters of reference from appropriate Professors are required

  • The applicant must be endorsed as the student most qualified in a letter from the President of the institution

  • An appropriate official, with knowledge of the applicant's financial status, should also certify that assistance would be required for a year of graduate study in scotland.

The scholarship provides funds to a total of $15,000 to be used initially against tuition, then board, transportation and other expenses. Applications must be submitted by December 15, 2006, for study commencing in teh fall of 2007. It is the Committee's usual practice to invite six (6) finalists to a luncheon in New York City during February or early March. Following this meeting, two (2) of these finalists will be awarded a scholarship for graduate study in Scotland.
