To enable students in the natural
and social sciences and engineering to cover science and technology
issues for print and broadcast media organizations. During the fellowship
term, each award recipient is assigned to a radio or television station,
a newspaper, or a magazine in the U.S., where he/she works as a reporter,
researcher, and/or production assistant covering science and technology
issues. Weekly stipend, plus travel allowances.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicant can
be any nationality, and must ordinarily be a graduate student in the
natural or social sciences or engineering. Candidate must be enrolled
in a university or college at the time of application, and have a demonstrated
talent for communicating technical ideas to general audiences. English,
journalism or other nontechnical fields are not eligible to apply.

who are beginning doctoral studies in the biological sciences. Students
may study at educational institutions in the United States or abroad;
citizens of other countries must enroll at institutions in the United
States. Awards are $14,000/year plus $12,000/year cost-of-education
allowance.

Technology.
IPST is a research university in partnership with the
Georgia Institute of Technology offering a multidisciplinary program
focusing on technical areas pertinent to the pulp and paper industry.
Students received generous financial incentives to further their education.
Every student accepted into the program on a full-time basis will receive
a full tuition scholarship and a competitive fellowship. To be eligible
for these awards, the student must be a citizen or legal permanent resident
of the United States or a citizen of Canada or Mexico. No teaching or
research assistantship duties are required to receive the scholarship
or fellowship.
Founded in 1929, the Institute of Paper Science and Technology
is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association
of Colleges and Schools to award Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy
degrees. Graduates are highly sought after with 98% receiving job offers

The fellow will help to present
and develop programs to school groups; develop and present exhibit hall
demonstrations; assist in presenting teacher workshops and weekend courses,
and aid in maintenance of the chemistry and biology laboratories. Award
is $18,200 plus health benefits. ELIGIBILITY: Candidate must
be authorized to work in the U.S., and possess and undergraduate degree

The National Cancer Institute offers
paid 6-month graduate-level internships with the possible option of
a 6-month renewal. Qualified graduate students receive firsthand experience
in health communications. Interns are assigned to the following areas
in the NCI's Office of Cancer Communications: Science Writing, Health
Promotion and Social Marketing, Cancer Information Service, Patient
Education, and Website Management.
ELIGIBILITY: Internships
are open to U.S. citizens currently enrolled in a graduate school program,
who wish to pursue an internship prior to completing the requirements
for a Master's degree. Applicants should have some background in the
biomedical or physical sciences, combined with communications, health
education, journalism, technical writing or website management.

Applicants for the 2002-2003 competition
for the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship
Program are now available.
The NSF will aware approximately
900 new Graduate Research Fellowships to support graduate study in science,
mathematics, and engineering. The NSF contracts with Oak Ridge Associated
Universities (ORAU) to provide the support services for the annual competition
of this prestigious fellowship program.
The deadline for applying in the
2002 competition is November 7, 2001. Awards will be announced in March
2002. Each three-year fellowship provides a stipend of $20,500 for 12-month
tenure, and a cost-of-education allowance of $10,500 per tenure year.
Graduate Research Fellowships are awarded on the basis of merit. Disciplinary
panels of scientists, mathematicians, and engineers convened by ORAU
will review each applicant's qualifications.
Fellowships are awarded for graduate
study leading to research-based master's or doctoral degrees in the
fields of science, mathematics, and engineering supported by the NSF.
Applicants must be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens
of the United States at the time of application. Applicants must be
in the early stages of their graduate study in science, mathematics,
or engineering.

Undergraduates who have completed
their junior year and beginning graduate students may apply for Summer
Student Fellowships in applied ocean physics, biology, chemistry, engineering,
geology, geophysics, mathematics, marine policy, oceanography, or physics.
Award is $3,900 plus travel allowance to pursue independent research
projects in oceanography and/or marine policy.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicant may
be of any nationality with at least a tentative interest in a career
in oceanography and/or marine policy.
