The NSA Scholarship Foundation is a 501©3 tax-exempt organization formed in 1969 by the National Society of Accountants in response to a firm commitment to education and the accounting profession.

The Foundation administers the NSA scholarship awards program for accounting students. A new educational program is under development that will support educational activities to expand the body of knowledge of today’s accounting and tax professional.

Who Can Apply?

Students majoring in accounting with a "B" or better grade point average. Students enrolled in a degree program at an accredited 2-year or 4-year college or university. High school students must wait until they are attending college to apply. Only undergraduate students are eligible. Only U.S. or Canadian citizens attending a U.S. accredited business school, college or university may apply.

How to Apply

In order to receive consideration, applications must be:

  • Accompanied by official transcripts bearing the official seal or registrar signature from the issuing institution from each college attended. Official transcripts may be submitted by the student with the application or submitted directly to the Foundation by the issuing institution. Students applying during their first year of college must submit high school transcripts in addition to official college transcripts.
  • Accompanied by a completed appraisal form which can be submitted by the student or the issuing professor. Submitted with all necessary documentation (official transcripts, appraisal forms) to be received no later than the March 10th deadline of each year. Students may submit the application by e-mail. However, fax and e-mail transcripts or appraisal forms will not be accepted.

How Recipients Are Selected

Scholarships are awarded primarily for academic attainment, demonstrated leadership ability and financial need.

The NSA District Screening Committee, comprised of one committee member representing each of NSA's eleven districts, meets once in a year in May for the purpose of reviewing applications for scholarships. The District Screening Committee will choose the best qualified candidates and forward their applications to the Foundation Candidate Committee.

The Foundation Candidate Committee will review the applications during the balance of the month of June. Its findings will be submitted to the Board of Trustees so that the scholarship winners can be announced in July.

Candidates, submitting a completed application packet, will be notified of the Trustees' decision by mail. Payment for scholarships will be made directly by the Foundation to the college or university for the students' account in late August for the upcoming academic year.

Special Awards

The Stanley H. Stearman Award is awarded annually to a relative of an NSA Active/Retired (living/deceased) member attending college and majoring in Accounting. The recipient of this award receives a stipend in the amount of $2,000 per year, not to exceed a three year period.

The Louis and Fannie Sager Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate of a Virginia public school who is enrolled as an undergraduate at a Virginia college or university, majoring in accounting. The stipend for this award ranges from $500 to $1,000.

The Charles Earp Memorial Scholarship is awarded to the student designated most outstanding in the competition. The recipient of this award receives an additional stipend of $200.

Scholarship Program

Since inception, the National Association of Black Accountants, Inc. (NABA) has provided over $5.08 million in scholarship funds to deserving students preparing to enter various business professions. Through the generous contributions of individuals, groups, and organizations that share NABA's desire to break through the economic barriers minorities often experience, NABA has offered over 40 national scholarships annually ranging from $500 - $6,000. In addition to providing an excellent opportunity to obtain funding for college, NABA invites the scholarship recipients to the Scholars' Retreat.

The Scholars' Retreat has become an integral part of our scholarship program and Annual National Convention. The retreat has hosted more than 140 high-achieving NABA student members over the past five years. Sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, the half-day retreat includes an opening luncheon, followed by an intense, interactive training session in which students are challenged with real-world scenarios in an attempt to prepare tomorrow's business leaders for their introduction into Corporate America. Participants in the Scholar's Retreat are provided travel, accomodations, and a small stipend to attend the Convention.

To qualify, individuals must:

  • Be an ethnic minority who is currently enrolled as a full-time (12 semester hours or equivalent), undergraduate freshman, sophomore, junior, or first-year senior accounting, finance, or business major
or
  • Be a minority graduate student enrolled or accepted into a Masters of Accountancy program.
  • Be a paid NABA member. A paid member is one whose membership dues have been received by NABA's National Office by the scholarship deadline (December 31st). (Dues of $20 for undergraduate students, or $120 for graduate students, can be submitted with a scholarship application.)
