Education Program
To attract and encourage undergraduate students to participate in
the sciences and mathematics, six prominent, New York liberal arts colleges
and universities - Barnard College, Colgate University, Hamilton College,
Manhattan College, St. Lawrence University, and Union College - together
with a leading research university, Cornell, have formed the New York
Science Education Program (NYSEP). NYSEP, through collective actions,
fosters the exchange of ideas for improving undergraduate education,
leading to improved science teaching and literacy.

hands-on experience assisting Zoo personnel with the daily operations
of a zoological park and aquarium and the intern program offers a wide

Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute - due February

A unique oceanographic research center that promotes a peer relationship
between engineers and scientists. MBARI uses state-of-the-art equipment
and methods to study the ocean and its environment.
New England Aquarium - due approximately February 1

The New England Aquarium focuses on raising people's awareness of the
environment through exhibits, education programs, public forums, and
outreach programs. Our work extends beyond Central Wharf, Boston to
conservation and research projects worldwide-from helping understand
environmental changes in Lake Victoria, Africa to saving the endangered
Hector's dolphin in New Zealand.
Research
Experience for Undergraduates Summer Programs
The National Science Foundation sponsors the Research for Undergraduates
Program (REU). The REU program makes possible a number of opportunities
for undergraduates to join research projects each summer. This allows
students to experience first-hand how basic research is carried out,
and to contribute consequentially. REU "Sites" are established
in all fields of science, mathematics, and engineering. Each Site consists
of a group of ten or so undergraduates, who work in the research programs
of the host institution. Students are in general accepted from trhoughout
the country. Each student is assigned to a specific reserach project,
where he/she works closely with the faculty, post-docs, and graduate
students. Students are granted stipends, and in some cases assistance
with housing and travel.
