Alumni Profiles

Amanda Valenta ’04 :
Senior Audit Associate, McGladrey & Pullen, LLP

  1. Briefly, what is it that you do?
Perform audits of private companies (mostly within the real estate and non-profit industries).

  2. What, if any, obstacles did you face trying to get your first job in this field?
I needed an accounting degree, and went from SLU to a program at Northeastern University where I got my masters in accounting, MBA and internship experience at this company prior to being hired.

  3. What advice would you give to students interested in working in your field?
An internship can be very valuable in determining if you enjoy the daily workload.

  4. What are some of the activities you were involved in while at SLU?
I played basketball during my freshman year, had many on-campus jobs (security driver, student activities desk clerk, gym receptionist, TA for accounting, tutor), and was a part of community service fraternity.

  5. How can students best prepare themselves while at SLU?
Get some experience working in an office. Whether it be an internship or some volunteer time, it will help you prepare for the daily commitment to any job you will have outside of college.

  6. In retrospect, is there anything you would have done differently with regard to your career?
I had a quick 4-week internship at a non-profit during my senior year at SLU. I wish I had signed up for this sooner in my college career and had the opportunity to expand my accounting knowledge prior to entering graduate school.

  7. What are your future plans?
I would like to reach manager level at the current firm I am at. I have completed the CPA exam, and have now started to look outside work for opportunities to better the quality of life. No one ever says "I wish I worked more..."

  8. Are you willing to talk with students interested in a career in your field? If so, how may they best contact you?
Yes. The best way to reach me is by email: amanda.valenta@rsmi.com
