Anthony (Tony) Ross '75, M'78:
Vice President for Student Affairs California State University, Los Angeles

  1. Briefly, what is it that you do?
I am responsible for leadership, supervision and management of the division of Student Affairs. Units reporting to me include: Admissions, Career Development Center, Counseling, Financial Aid, Educational Opportunity Program, Enrollment Management, GEAR UP, Housing and Residence Life, International Programs and Services, Office of Students with Disabilities, Outreach and Recruitment, New Student Orientation, Records & Registration, Student Health Center, Student Support Programs, Talent Search, Testing Center, Upward Bound.

  2. What, if any, obstacles did you face trying to get your first job in this field?
I wasn't sure what I going to do after graduating from St. Lawrence so I wasn't aware of the many options I had for my career. I could have followed any number of career paths. Fortunately I had worked at SLU as a counselor for the HEOP summer program for two years and was recognized as a person whose skill set could benefit historically underrepresented students in their quest to gain access to and receive a college education. The rest as they say is "history".

  3. What advice would you give to students interested in working in your field?
I've always worked in higher education settings and I would recommend students to become involved in all aspects of campus life, gain an understanding of and appreciation for diversity, and to volunteer or seek employment in campus offices to better understand how colleges and universities operate.

  4. What are some of the activities you were involved in while at SLU?
My main activities were the Black Student Union, basketball, and football.

  5. How can students best prepare themselves while at SLU?
Try to gain experience outside of SLU through service learning, internships, and summer employment opportunities. Canton and the campus are isolated and don't really reflect the full scope of life outside the North Country.

  6. In retrospect, is there anything you would have done differently with regard to your career?
No, the path I took was exciting and St. Lawrence offered me a great start to my career through the assistance of friends and mentors. I've had great opportunities and I've understood the value of being open to new opportunities no matter where they might take me.

  7. What are your future plans?
I'm at the stage in my career where I am considering becoming a university president. There is much that goes into such a decision so I have more soul searching to do.

  8. Are you willing to talk with students interested in a career in your field? If so, how may they best contact you?
Yes I am and the best way to reach me is via email: tony.ross@calstatela.edu
