Moira Collins ’84 :
Senior Vice President, Product Development, Gartner, Inc.

- Briefly, what is it that you do?
Responsible for the development and innovation of products serving the IT professionals market. I have also created and developed the Enterprise Program Management Office, been part of and have run worldwide Marketing and experienced several tours of duty in sales, operations and product type roles.
- What, if any, obstacles did you face trying to get your first job in this field?
Takes time to develop the background and expertise, not hard, but takes years of experience working in the field and in the organization to truly understand how to identify market opportunities and how to develop the products and services to meet those needs.
- What advice would you give to students interested in working in your field?
Being client-focused and understanding the market trends and needs is critical to successful product development and product growth.
- What are some of the activities you were involved in while at SLU?
Sang in the Sinners a capella group
One of the original founding members of Alpha Phi Omega, the service fraternity
- How can students best prepare themselves while at SLU?
Spend time understanding the world, its history, how people and societies work
Develop a baseline understanding of economics, accounting, scientific method
Enjoy learning – there is no better time to explore your interests and indulge your mind
- In retrospect, is there anything you would have done differently with regard to your
career?
I have been fortunate to travel in my career – I wish I had taken more time to “smell the roses” in those distant lands. I also wish I had taken the opportunity to work in another country for a few years.
- What are your future plans?
I will leverage all aspects of my product, operations, sales and marketing experiences in my future. At some point in time, I plan to take on a COO role with a small, rapidly growing company.
