George Ashline '89
Associate Professor of Mathematics, Saint Michael's College, Colchester, VT

Briefly, what is it that you do?
I teach undergraduate-level mathematics and fulfill the many other expectations of a faculty member at a small, liberal arts college.
What, if any, obstacles did you face trying to get your first job in this field?
After completing my PhD, I found it difficult finding a position in a small college setting similar to my undergraduate alma mater. I was also hoping to return to the northeast to find a position. After taking a position for a year at larger university in Missouri, I was fortunate to attain my current position, which I have had since the mid-1990s.
What advice would you give to students interested in working in your field?
I pursued graduate school in mathematics right after my undergraduate study, and that worked well for me since I knew that I wanted to learn more in the field and complete an advanced degree. Ultimately, this is right for some students and not right for others, and students should always pursue their interests and those areas for which they are passionate. For some, this may mean directly going to graduate school, and for others this may mean first getting some experience in the working world or completing a stint of service after graduation.
What are some of the activities you were involved in while at SLU?
I was a member of the Outing Club and a participant in intramural athletics. I was also a member and eventually a leader of our campus mathematics honor society, Pi Mu Epsilon.
How can students best prepare themselves while at SLU?
Take advantage of all of the wonderful opportunities they have to work with a dedicated, gifted faculty and use some of the available excellent academic facilities and resources.
In retrospect, is there anything you would have done differently with regard to your career?
Not really; I knew that I wanted to become involved in teaching. I feel blessed to participate in a small, friendly college community in which I can pursue a fulfilling career of teaching, scholarship, and service.
What are your future plans?
I have now been a professor at Saint Michael's for about a dozen years, and I am looking forward to spending many more years here and fulfilling the many different roles that I play as a professor at small, liberal arts, Catholic college.
Are you willing to talk with students interested in a career in your field? If so, how may they best contact you?
I would be happy to hear from students interested in pursuing a career similar to mine. Probably the best way to communicate is via e-mail, and my address is: gashline@smcvt.edu.
