Canaras General Information

Whether you're here to just relax and enjoy our serene and picturesque setting on shimmering Upper Saranac Lake, or your plans include boating, water skiing, tennis, golfing or a hike, you've come to the right place! Please take a moment to read the following to ensure a safe and fun filled week.

Check-In: Check in is after 3:00 p.m. on your scheduled arrival day. The first meal served will be dinner on arrival day. Please check out promptly after breakfast on your day of departure so that the staff can provide housekeeping services to incoming guests.

Dining Hours: Breakfast 8:00 - 9:00 a.m. Lunch 12:30 p.m. Dinner 6:30 p.m.

Lunch and dinner are served at specific times, so please be prompt.

Packed Lunch Requests and Special Dietary Needs

 If you would like a packed lunch to take with you on a day you intend to be away, please make your request to the cook or the camp director the evening meal prior to your need. For those with special dietary requirements, please speak with the camp director or cook.

Ice

Refrigerators are located in the Main Lodge and the Mintzer Library for your use. Ice machines are located in the Main Lodge and Library for your convenience.

Happy Hour

Happy Hour is from 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Ice, glasses and water will be supplied. All BYOB for liquor. Cheese and crackers are provided on Saturday night. Guests "chip in" on other evenings.

Kids Hour

5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Saturday through Friday.

The bell will ring at 5:30 p.m. to indicate the start of the Kid's Hour. Please bring children to the dining hall porch. The staff will supervise activities and entertain them should you choose to participate in Happy Hour. On Friday, children are supervised after dinner for a marshmallow roast!

Fire Safety

Please note the location of the fire extinguisher in your area. Be careful with matches and be sure all fires are out when retiring. Fireplace screens should always be used.

Housekeeping

 Please keep the camp looking nice. No cigarette butts on the grounds or in the lake. Please put used bottles, cans, cups, etc., in the wastebaskets and observe proper recycling procedures.

Pets

Sorry, no pets are permitted on the grounds of Canaras.

 There is a pay phone located on the hall of the Main Lodge for your convenience. All business calls while at Canaras should be made on this phone. There is a phone in the director's cottage for emergency calls (incoming and outgoing): (518) 891-4111

Linen and Towels

Towels are changed Wednesday morning. You may wash towels and/or linens anytime in the laundry.

Sports

Tennis: No Charge - guests supply racquets and balls. One hour please (when others are waiting).

Golf: Saranac Inn Golf Course, Tupper Lake Golf Course, Saranac Lake Golf Course, and Lake Placid Golf Course (see camp director for information).

Fishing: Please, no fishing in swimming area; only off the fishing rock at the Boathouse.

Swimming and Boating

Parents are responsible for the safety of their children. No lifeguards are provided. Guests swim and boat at their own risk. Motor boats are for staff use only. All other boats are available for guest use. Please treat the equipment as your own. Please return boats to proper areas and safety devices to the Boathouse. 

All children must wear life jackets in all boats (including paddleboats) and we recommend around the waterfront as well. All adults must have a life jacket in any boat or canoe. Everyone must wear a life jacket in a sailboat.

Wind Surfing

Boards are available under the Gazebo. Assistance is available for assembly. Buddy system is in effect. No one goes out alone. You must have a partner watching to provide or call for help if needed. Life jacket or belt is required. Due to the popularity of the boards, please be reasonable with your time on the lake.

Water Skiing

There is no charge for this activity which begins daily at approximately 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. You may choose morning or afternoon. One ride per person, per day. Three tries to get up and/or for dropping a ski per day. A sign up sheet provided on busy days.
