Biology Major Awarded Research Grant

Senior biology major Lia Pizzicato was recently awarded an undergraduate Research Grant from Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society.  She is currently studying cell signaling pathways altered by Inontus obliquus (Chaga mushroom) that promote death of melanoma cells in vitro.  Lia is conducting these experiments under the mentorship of Dr. Kari Heckman, and her results will be incorporated into her Senior Honors Thesis.

Lia is an active member of the Alpha Iota chapter of Beta Beta Beta at St. Lawrence University. Beta Beta Beta biology honorary was founded in 1922 and is dedicated to improving the understanding and appreciation of biological study. The research grants are awarded by the national office and are intended to support undergraduate research by awarding cash scholarships annually to students conducting research.
