Faculty at St. Lawrence University are known as scholars in their fields and masters in the art of teaching. The faculty at this institution, however, are especially noteworthy for their generosity in freely sharing their work and for their unbridled enthusiasm in supporting colleagues' effective innovations. The Best Practices Web project is a wonderful example of those characteristics as they play out in instructional and pedagogical practices.

Dr. John Collins

Department:
Global Studies
Project Title:
The Weave
Project Description:
John Collins' Global News Analysis course is responsible for The Weave, a blog featuring under reported news stories from around the globe. John's students combat mainstream media by taking part in their own investigative journalism in an effort to bring less prominent news items to the masses. The Weave was inspired by similar projects such as Cal State Sonoma's Project Censored, and War News Radio at Swarthmore College.

Dr. Brad Baldwin

Department:
Biology
Project Title:
GIS & Lake Ecology
Project Description:
Typically, Dr. Brad Baldwin's Lake & River Ecology class would take out a map, plot their intended route(s), and make the 1 hour trip to Cranberry Lake to explore the ecology of the lake and collect samples. With so much travel time involved (2 hours round-trip) in a 3 hour lab period, Brad decided to work with the GIS department to provide students with a better use of their time through researching the area with St. Lawrence University's Internet Map Server before the trip.
