Eight Comprise Hall of Fame Class of 2010

Seven  former St. Lawrence University athletes and a retired coach will comprise the Class of 2010 for the St. Lawrence University Athletic Hall of Fame when induction ceremonies are held Oct. 2-3.

The annual Hall of Fame induction will be part of a busy weekend on the St. Lawrence campus as the dedication of Hall-Leet Stadium, the Saints' refurbished field hockey and lacrosse venue, will take place on Friday following a field hockey game against Hamilton College and the dedication of the new Stratford Football Locker Room will take place Saturday morning at 9:30 prior to Hall of Fame activities which begin with a buffet luncheon at noon.

The luncheon and following induction is open to the public. Luncheon tickets are $25 and reservations are requested. Reservations may be made by calling Cheryl Kennedy at 315-229-5418 or through email : ckennedy@stlawu.edu.

The 2010 Hall of Fame inductees include former Saint swim coach Bob Northrop, former football player and Rhodes Scholar Howard McKinley '49, basketball and tennis star Gene Simonsen '63, soccer star John Prokos '80, baseball and football standout Steve Owens '87, alpine skier and lacrosse star Suzanne Sargent Jones '87, women's lacrosse goaltender Nikki Williams '91 and track and field All America Reili Liiva Cantu '98. 

Saints Finish 21st in Final Learfield Director's Cup Standings

St. Lawrence University's athletic program capped another outstanding year both in competition and in the classroom with a 21st place finish in the final Learfield Sports Director's Cup standings, while the top-two grade point averages in the Class of 2010 belonged to student-athletes.

St. Lawrence Honors Senior Student-Athletes at Annual Awards Dinner

May 21: The St. Lawrence University Athletic Department honored its senior student-athletes at the annual awards dinner on Tuesday, May 11 at Eben Holden.  Seniors Alyssa Pirinelli, Eric Jones, Ben von Reyn, Hillary St. John and Chelsea Nuffer earned awards, while athletic trainer Ron Waske, facility operations veteran Carl Hull and women's cross country head coach Mike Howard were also recognized.

"I am very proud of each of our 2010 award winners, as they truly are special people and athletes," said Margie Strait, St. Lawrence University's Director of Athletics.  "They are all dedicated students, talented athletes and made their marks on campus throughout their four years."

Eight Saints, Varsity Eight Crew Earn Conference Accolades

April 28: The Liberty League announced its weekly award winners on Monday afternoon, and eight St. Lawrence University student-athletes and the women's Varsity Eight were amongst those honored. 

The St. Lawrence University women's crew squad's varsity eight won its third straight Liberty League Championship on Saturday, and was named the conference's Boat of the Week for its efforts. The Saints won the event by open water, crossing the finish line with a time of 7:21.0, more than eight seconds ahead of second place Skidmore. Sophomore Lizzy Stokes-Cawley stroked the boat, while first-year Jessica Burdett, senior Amelia Bell, first-year Maggie Fellows, senior Amelia Lalley, senior Eloise Lachance, sophomore Kathleen Slocum and senior Jane Connolly rounded out the championship boat.  Junior Lauren Reed coxed the varsity crew.

St. Lawrence in 15th Overall in 2009-10 Directors’ Cup Standings

Apr. 1: St. Lawrence University ranks in the top 5% of 273 qualifying institutions, in the Division III Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings.

The University is in 15th place, the highest ranking in school history.

St. Lawrence is the highest ranking Liberty League member in the updated Directors' Cup standings entering the spring, followed by the University of Rochester in 43rd position.  Other Liberty League institution standings include Hobart and William Smith in 110th, Rensselaer in 116th, Skidmore in 119th, Clarkson in 186th, Hamilton in 204th and Union in 271st.

Softball Doubleheader at Elmira Postponed until Thursday

Mar. 30: The St. Lawrence University softball games at Elmira College scheduled for Tuesday afternoon have been postponed due to weather.

The doubleheader has been rescheduled to this Thursday, April 1. Game one is set to begin at 3:00pm in Elmira, NY.

The games will be the first for the Saints' softball team since its spring trip to Florida, which ended on March 13. The Scarlet and Brown boast a record of 7-4 thus far in 2010, and will host Potsdam State on Saturday, April 3rd in the team's first games in Canton, NY this season.

Ten Saints Earn Liberty League Weekly Honors

Mar. 16: The Liberty League announced its weekly award winners on Monday afternoon, and 10 St. Lawrence University student-athletes were amongst those honored. 

Four of the honorees came from the men's and women's track and field programs, which had a fantastic weekend at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships.  Junior Wendy Pavlus was named the conference's Track Performer of the Week after winning the national championship in the 5000m run in 16:59.4.  It was the second national title this year for the Tupper Lake, NY native, who also won the 2009 NCAA Cross Country championship.

Senior teammate Alyssa Pirinelli also captured her first national championship in the shot put, thus earning Liberty League Field Performer of the Week honors.  Her throw of 14.63 earned her the title, and the North Tonawanda, NY native was also an All-America in the weight throw.

Hulton, Kiplagat Receive Departmental Honors

Feb. 9: The St. Lawrence University Athletic Department has announced that Jenna Hulton '12 and Steve Kiplagat '12 of the cross country and track and field programs are the 2009 Ronald C. Hoffmann First-Year Scholar-Athete Award winners.

Web Site Offers Customizable St. Lawrence Apparel Items

Jan. 24: A new Web site, SaintsAthletics.com, has been launched as a partnership of St. Lawrence University and Victory Promotions, a Watertown, N.Y.-based company. The site offers customizable apparel, with logos from each of St. Lawrence's 32 athletic teams as options for each item.

Five Saints Earn Conference Accolades

Dec. 8: The Liberty League and ECAC Hockey announced its weekly award winners on Monday afternoon, and five St. Lawrence University student-athletes were amongst those honored. 

First-year student Kayla Sullivan was named ECAC Hockey's Rookie of the Week for the second time this season after having a solid outing against Princeton.  The Caledonia, ON native scored two goals against the Tigers to lead the Scarlet and Brown to a key conference victory, 3-1.

Senior Chris Woolston was named the Liberty League "Swimmer of the Week" after his performances at the 2009 conference championship meet where he earned "Swimmer of the Year" honors.  The Madison, CT native earned the top position in all of his events, including the 200 IM, 200 Free, 100 Back and 200 Back, helping St. Lawrence to a fourth place overall finish as a team.
