Saints Honored by Liberty League

Oct. 19:  Six St. Lawrence University student-athletes and a crew boat were honored by the Liberty League Monday afternoon for their performances during the last week.

The Saints football team had an outstanding weekend as they traveled to Union on Saturday, coming away with an exciting 23-14 win against the Dutchmen.  Junior Brendan McCarthy earned "Co-Defensive Performer of the Week" honors as he made two key interceptions and chipped in seven tackles including 1.5 for a loss in the victory. 

First-year student Brayden Henry earned "Co-Rookie of the Week" as he was phenomenal along the offensive line against Union on Saturday. The Greenwich, CT native helped the Saints post 321 yards of offense against the Dutchmen, while owning the time of possession (34:53) and third down conversion (8-of-14) battles. 

The win was St. Lawrence's first in Schenectady since 1969 and places the Scarlet and Brown at the top of the Liberty League with a 3-0 record. 

The Saints men's soccer team went 2-0-1 over the course of the week, defeating St. John Fisher and Union, and playing to a 1-1 draw against Ithaca College.  Junior forward Brendan Gorman earned "Offensive Performer of the Week" as he scored four goals in three games.  The Ottawa, Ontario native contributed the game winning goals in both the 3-1 win over St. John Fisher and the 2-1 win in overtime at Union.  He also had the tying goal in 1-1 tie against Ithaca College. 

Saints Honored by Liberty League

Oct. 11:  Five St. Lawrence University student-athletes and a crew boat were honored by the Liberty League Monday afternoon for their performances during the last week.

The Saints cross-country teams hosted the 2010 Ronald C. Hoffmann Invitational on Saturday.  Senior Jeremy Mwenda earned "Co-performer of the Week" honors as he won his first collegiate race with an 8k time 26:02, 10 seconds ahead of the runner-up.

First-year student Steve Petramel earned "Co-Rookie of the Week" honors as he was the first rookie to cross the finish line at the 2010 Ronald C. Hoffmann Invitational on Saturday. The Queensbury, NY native raced the 9k course in 26:42, earning 8th place overall.

Senior Wendy Pavlus earned "Co-Performer of the Week" as she won for the fifth straight time, earning the individual title at the 2010 Hoffmann Invitational. The Tupper Lake, NY native ran the slick 6k course in 22:11, leading the Saints to the team title.

The Saints men's soccer team took battled Liberty League opponents Skidmore and Union last weekend.  Junior Brendan Gorman earned "Co-Offensive Performer of the Week" honors as he led the Saints to a weekend sweep. He scored the second goal in a 3-0 win against Skidmore, and set up the overtime game winner for a 1-0 win against Union as the Saints came out of the weekend with the league lead in the standings.

St. Lawrence Ranks 28th in DIII, 46th Overall in NCSA Power Rankings

St. Lawrence University has been ranked 28th among NCAA Division III schools and ranks 46th overall among all NCAA institutions in the NCSA Athletic Recruiting 2010 Power Rankings.

Oct. 4:  Six St. Lawrence University student-athletes were honored by the Liberty League Monday afternoon for their performances during the last week.

Five Saints Earn Weekly Liberty League Honors

Sept. 27:  Five St. Lawrence University student-athletes were honored by the Liberty League Monday afternoon for their performances during the last week.


The women's tennis team traveled to William Smith College to take part in the ITA Regional Championships.  Junior Hillary Drewry earned "Co-performer of the Week" honors as she went 2-1 in singles and 4-1 in doubles over the weekend.  In singles, she advanced to the Round of 16 with wins over opponents from Ithaca and William Smith before falling to the #2 seed from Rochester. In doubles, she partnered with Stephanie Finn to advance to the finals. They defeated teams from Ithaca, NYU, TCNJ and Rochester before falling to the #1 seed from TCNJ in three sets in the championship match.

The St. Lawrence football team successfully retained the Hoffman Cup with a dramatic 13-6 victory over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.  Junior Ethan Sutton earned "Co-Offensive Performer of the Week" honors as he scored both touchdowns for the Saints.  The South Paris, ME native had an 80-yard rush on a fake punt for a score, and then added the game-winning touchdown on a 75-yard completion. Sutton finished with 176 all-purpose yards and was his team's MVP of the game.

SLU Dedicating Renovated Athletics Facilities

CANTON - Dedications of renovated athletics facilities at St. Lawrence University will be held during Family Weekend, on Friday and Saturday, October 1 and 2.

The dedication of Hall-Leet Stadium, which honors two long-time University coaches, Dotty Hall and Don Leet, will take place on Friday, October 1, following the St. Lawrence field hockey team's game versus Hamilton College.  In addition, the dedication will celebrate the renovation of North Country Field, the artificial-turf playing surface at Hall-Leet Stadium used primarily for field hockey and lacrosse, as well as an upgraded entrance.

On Saturday, October 2, the upgraded and modernized Stratford Football Locker Room will be dedicated, memorializing the late Ted "Bear" Stratford '57, who successfully coached the football team to 64 victories over 10 years in the 1960s and 1970s.

All of the construction for the projects was financed through gifts and grants.

In addition to replacement of the turf on North Country Field, that project includes a new stadium entrance, a pair of stone-and-brick gates, and a fencing system.

Eight Saints Honored By Liberty League

Sept. 20:  Eight St. Lawrence University student-athletes were honored by the Liberty League Monday afternoon for their performances during the last week.

The men's tennis team hosted the annual SLU Fall Classic this past weekend.  Sophomore Philip Jackley earned "Co-Performer of the Week"  as he reached the "A" Singles finals and "A" Doubles semifinals.  He defeated opponents from Rochester, Hamilton and Ithaca to make it into the final singles round.   He split sets with Josh Rifkin of Ithaca 1-6, 6-2, (3-3) before being forced to retire due to injury in the super tie-breaker. Teaming with Tony Wilkey in doubles, he reached the semifinals after beating Clayton Tontarski and Neville Bilimoria of RIT 8-2 before falling to Hamilton.

On the soccer field, the women's soccer team took on RIT and Elmira on the road.  Junior goalkeeper Abby van Geldern earned "Defensive Performer of the Week" as she posted her sixth shutout in seven games this season as the Saints swept both teams by 1-0 scores. She had three saves against RIT, handing the Tigers their first loss this season, and two in the win at Elmira.

On the men's side, sophomore Sam Demello earned "Co-Offensive Performer of the Week" as he scored the game-winning goal, his second of the year, in a 2-0 win over previously unbeaten RIT on Friday.  He then picked up his third game winner on Saturday as the Saints beat Elmira 5-1.

Seven Saints Honored by Liberty League

Sept. 14: Seven St. Lawrence University student-athletes were honored by the Liberty League Monday afternoon for their performances during the last week.

The cross-country team participated in the North Country Five meet this past weekend.  First-year student Jon Eng earned "Co-Rookie of the Week" honors as he was the 5k runner-up in his first collegiate race with a time of 17:12.  On the women's side, junior Jenna Hulton earned "Co-performer of the week" as she won the North Country Five 5k with a time of 20:00.6.  She finished 56 seconds ahead of the runner-up.    

The men's tennis team opened up their 2010-11 fall season last weekend, traveling to Rochester to take part in the annual Flower City Tournament.  Sophomore Philip Jackley earned "Co-Performer of the Week" honors as he went 3-0 at third singles, defeating opponents from Robert Wesleyan, RIT, and Nazareth College.  The Wayzata, MN native, alongside doubles partner Tony Wilkey also went 3-0 in the no. 1 position at the tournament last weekend. 

The women's tennis team traveled to Geneva, NY to take part in the Mary Hosking Invitational.  Sophomore Whitney Hubbell also earned "Co-Performer of the Week" honors as she was a C Flight singles finalist and went 3-1, defeating opponents from Ithaca, Nazareth, and St. Lawrence.  Hubbell, a Montclair, NJ native, was also a B Flight doubles Finalist and went 2-1 alongside teammate Amanda Ryan.

Sept. 7: Five St. Lawrence University student-athletes were honored by the Liberty League Monday afternoon for their performances during the opening weekend of contests.

Ron Waske Receives John P. Taylor Award at Convocation

Aug. 27: Ron Waske, a 1969 graduate of St. Lawrence University and recently retired athletic trainer, was the recipient of the 2010 John P. Taylor Award at the Convocation ceremony, which marks the start of the academic year.
