St. Lawrence University's athletic program ranks 19^th in the 2010-11 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup after the first compilation of winter NCAA tournament results.

Feb. 3:  The St. Lawrence University Athletic Department has announced that Maggie Fellows '13 and Jacob Fredericks '13 are the recipients of the Hoffmann Outstanding First-Year Scholar-Athlete Awards.

Fellows, a sophomore on the women's crew team, is the women's recipient for 2010.  The Warwick, MA native posted a 3.97 grade point average in her first year at St. Lawrence.  Rowing five-seat in the women's Varsity eight, Maggie helped power the crew to its third consecutive Liberty League Championship in the spring of 2010.  The rookie also helped her team earn a silver medal at the New York State Collegiate Championships and a bid to the NCAA Championships.

Fellows, who posted the fastest 2k erg time of the women in that crew, currently holds the school record for the 6k distance.  Maggie's efforts landed her an invitation to the U.S. Rowing U-23 Team selection camp this past November.

Fredericks earned the men's scholar-athlete award thanks to a 3.81 grade point average in his first year at St. Lawrence.  Jacob contributed at the NYSCTC Indoor Track and Field Championships, as he was sixth in the triple jump, helping the Saints to second place in the team standings.

Fredericks went on to produce points in three events at the Liberty League Outdoor Championships, including a second place finish in the triple jump.  He ranked first on the team in the 400m hurdles and second in the 55m hurdles, 60m hurdles and triple jump throughout the 2009-10 season.

St. Lawrence University's athletic program has matched its highest ranking since the introduction of the Director's Cup in 1995-96, finishing the fall season ranked 14^th among 162 NCAA Division III programs which qualified for ranking in the Learfield Cup standings.

Dec. 14:  Eight St. Lawrence University student-athletes were honored by the Liberty League Monday afternoon for their performances during the last week.

The women's basketball team traveled to Weston, MA to take part in the Park Lodge tournament hosted by Regis College.  Junior co-captain Casey Capello earned "Performer of the Week" as she helped the Saints to a 2-0 weekend and the tournament title. The Hanover, MA native recorded 12 points, four rebounds and two steals in a 72-59 win over Framingham College on Saturday. She capped the weekend with 16 points, two rebounds and a steal as the Saints defeated host Regis College 67-60 in the championship game on Sunday.

First-year student Kelly Legg earned "Co-Rookie of the Week" as she recorded 22 points, four rebounds, a block and two steals against Framingham and then scored 11 points and had eight rebounds, three blocks and a steal in the championship game against Regis College. 

The men's and women's indoor track and field teams hosted the Saint Holiday Race this past weekend and six members were honored.  On the men's side, junior Justin Spalik earned "Track Performer of the Week" as he won the 55 hurdles in a time of 7.98 (currently ranked sixth in Division III) and ran the anchor leg on the 4x400 relay. 

Dec. 7:  Ten St. Lawrence University student-athletes and a crew boat were honored by the Liberty League Monday afternoon for their performances during the last week. 

The women's basketball team improved to 5-1, posting two wins on its home court this week.  Junior co-captain Casey Capello earned "Performer of the Week" honors as she averaged 20.3 points per game, including a career-high 29 point performance against Ithaca College, leading the Saints to a 2-1 week.  The Hanover, MA native recorded 16 points and six rebounds in a 72-58 win over Plattsburgh State on Tuesday, and then netted her career and game-high 29 points with four steals on Friday in an 82-80 loss to Ithaca. She capped the weekend with 16 points as the Saints defeated the Elmira College Soaring Eagles 79-66 on Saturday.

Earning "Co-Rookie of the Week" was first-year student Kelly Legg who averaged 17.0 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.6 blocks per contest on the week.  The Fairport, NY native  recorded 20 points and six rebounds against Plattsburgh State on Tuesday and then scored 11 points with a block and two steals against Ithaca on Friday. She closed out the weekend with a double-double performance, scoring 20 points while adding 10 rebounds, three assists and two blocks in the victory over Elmira on Saturday.

Nov. 24: St. Lawrence University is ranked 17^th overall in the first set of the Division III Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings.

With the first four NCAA Championships now finished including men's and women's cross country, field hockey and volleyball, the Saints have earned 113.0 points.  That total, which comes from only cross country points, has St. Lawrence tied with Williams College and only three points behind Amherst.

Having landed in 17^th position thus far, St. Lawrence is ranked ahead of other outstanding athletic programs including Dickinson, Stevens Point (WI), Nebraska Wesleyan, Bowdoin and Christopher Newport.  Skidmore College is the next Liberty League team in the Directors' Cup standings in 34^th position followed by Clarkson University in a tie for 54^th.

The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today.  Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports - seven women's and seven men's.

The next Division III standings will be released Thursday, December 9.
