Four Saints Earn Liberty League Weekly Honors

Sept. 6:  Four St. Lawrence University student-athletes were honored by the Liberty League Monday afternoon for their performances during the last week. 

The men's cross country team, ranked third in the national pre-season poll, won the 2011 "Cardinal Classic" on Saturday afternoon in Plattsburgh, NY.  Senior John Johnston earned "Co-Performer of the week" honors as he won his second collegiate race, leading the Saints to victory with a time of 15:37. 

On the women's side, the nationally-ranked No. 20 Saints came in second to host No. 13 Plattsburgh State.  First-year student Megan Hulton earned "Rookie of the week" honors as she made her collegiate debut, recording a third place finish with a time of 19:01. 

The St. Lawrence football team battled Utica College on Saturday afternoon, falling by the score of 48-35 in Canton, NY.  First-year wide receiver Colby Johnson was recognized as "Rookie of the week" as he made four receptions in his first collegiate start.  The North Attleboro, Mass. native had a total of 68 yards receiving, including a 40-yard catch.

Brenda Crawford, 12 New Graduate Assistants Join Athletic Department

Aug. 18: St. Lawrence University Athletic Director Margie Straight announced the hiring of Brenda Crawford as the new head men's hockey trainer, as well as 12 new graduate assistant coaches, including four alumni, to work with nine of the University's athletic teams.

Crawford joins the St. Lawrence athletic training staff and will work with the Division I men's hockey program, as well as assist with the University's Division III programs.  She served as the primary trainer for Clarkson University's women's hockey team last year after working at Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts, functioning as an athletic training teaching assistant.

Crawford has extensive experience in the Northeast, including work with Division I programs at Brown University in 2009. Crawford also worked as the assistant athletic trainer with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League in Ontario from 2005 to 2007.  Crawford, who graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 2002 with a BA in Kinesiology, earned a second degree in Athletic Therapy from the Sheridan Institute of Technology in 2007 before gaining a master's degree in Athletic Training from Bridgewater State.

Degon, Williams Join Athletic Department Staff

Aug. 8: St. Lawrence University Athletic Director Margie Strait has announced the hiring of Ryan Degon as the new Head Athletic Trainer and Deshaya Williams as the new Assistant Coordinator of Student-Athlete Development.

Degon, a North Country native from Malone, NY, comes to St. Lawrence after working as a trainer at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.  He worked for two years as an assistant athletic trainer responsible for the Division I football program following a two year stint as a graduate assistant.  Degon, who earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from SUNY Cortland and a Master's Degree from Chattanooga, also had athletic training experience at Cornell University.

Degon is an approved clinical instructor (ACI) for the graduate athletic training program, a certified CPR/AED instructor, and is certified in the application of Augmented Soft Tissue Mobilization (ASTYM). He is also trained in the administration of IV therapy, emergency airways, and other advanced life support skills.

Meanwhile, Williams arrives to Canton, NY after working for one season as a track and field assistant coach at SUNY Fredonia.  A native of Saratoga Springs, NY, Deshaya attended Penn State University where she won the 2003 National Championship in the discus and was a three-time All-American and Big Ten champion.  Williams, who will also serve as the Saints' throws coach as well as the Assistant Coordinator of Student-Athlete Development, has also competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2000 and 2004.

Tracy King Named New Commissioner of the Liberty League

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Tracy King, who has been involved in collegiate athletics for nearly 20 years in various communication and administrative roles, has been named today as Commissioner of the 11-member Division III Liberty League. The announcement came from Dr. Sharon Beverly, Director of Athletics & Physical Education at Vassar College and President of the Liberty League. King succeeds Tim Danehy, who served as the Liberty League Commissioner for the past four years.

King, who served as the Commissioner of the 11-member Division III Skyline Conference from 2005-2011, took a one-year hiatus from intercollegiate athletics - from October, 2010 to the present - as a Public Relations Officer with the Capital Region BOCES, located in Albany, NY., before rejoining intercollegiate athletics.  In his role, King has provided external and internal public relations and communications services for the Niskayuna Central School District through the Capital Region BOCES communication service.

As Commissioner of the Liberty League, King will serve as the primary liaison between the league and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), facilitating the relationship as it relates to Liberty League programs, compliance and eligibility. King will be responsible for Liberty League planning and budget management, Web site development and maintenance, marketing, sponsorship development and licensing practices for Liberty League institutions.

Senior Student-Athletes Honored at Annual Awards Dinner

May 17: The St. Lawrence University Athletic Department honored its senior student-athletes at the annual awards dinner on Tuesday at Eben Holden.  Seniors Wendy Pavlus, Dan Ramsey, Jordyn Buzza, Jeremy Mwenda, Chris Funch and Caitlin Estes earned awards, while associate athletic director Randy LaBrake and men's soccer head coach Bob Durocher and head football coach Mark Raymond were also recognized.

"I am very proud of each of our award winners, as they truly are special people and athletes that accomplished amazing things during their time on campus," said Margie Strait, St. Lawrence University's Director of Athletics.  "They are all dedicated students, talented athletes who made a major impact on our department."

Pavlus and Ramsey earned the Martha Finch Awards, which recognize the outstanding female and male senior athlete of the year.  A winner of four national championships including two in her senior year, Pavlus is a three-time National Athlete of the Year award winner and a seven-time conference Performer of the Year.  She is one of the finest athletes in University history, and will look to add to her impressive resume at the upcoming 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships where she has qualified to participate in two events.

Six Saints and a Crew Earn Weekly Honors

April 12:  Six St. Lawrence University student-athletes and a crew were honored by the Liberty League for their performances during the last week. 

Earning "Co-Boat of the Week" was the women's crew second varsity eight, which defeated Ithaca on Saturday on the Cayuga inlet.  The Saints negotiated the 2000 meter course in 7:06.70, beating out the Bombers who came in seconds behind at 7:08.80. The eight was coxed by Kelly Greenwood '13 and stroked by Alie Mihuta '14. Amanda Brewer '12, Alyssa Goley '14, Kait Murphy '14, Sally Dankner '13, Liz Weber '12, Catie LePage '11, and Anna Lavanger '14 also powered the eight.

The baseball team played a four-game series with Liberty League rival University of Rochester where the teams split.  Senior Chris Cook pitched a four hitter for a seven inning shutout win over the Yellowjackets, 5-0, to start the weekend series.  The Sunderland, MA native struck out five and walked one.

First-year student Jasper Heaton earned "Co-Rookie of the Week" as he shot his collegiate low with a two-over 74 on Saturday.  The Barton, VT native was second overall in the field and helped lead St. Lawrence to the team title at the Utica College Spring Invitational. 

On the lacrosse field, junior midfielder Matt Pope earned "Co-Offensive Performer of the Week" as he had a five-goal week for St. Lawrence.  The Newfields, NH native scored three goals in an 8-7 win over Plattsburgh State. Pope then followed with two goals against Union College.

Three Saints Earn Weekly Honors

April 4: Three St. Lawrence University student-athletes were honored by the Liberty League Monday afternoon for their performances during the last week.

The men's lacrosse team battled Potsdam State and #13 Skidmore and came away with with a 13-2 victory over the Bears before falling 16-10 to the Thoroughbreds. Junior midfielder Caldwell Rohrbach earned "Co-Offensive Performer of the Week" as he totaled seven points over two games last. The Seattle, WA native had four goals and an assist against Skidmore, and chipped in a goal and an assist in the win over Potsdam State.

The baseball team concluded the week 3-2 playing Oswego and conference opponent Union. First-year student Bryan Palmero earned "Co-Rookie of the Week" as he hit .563 with nine hits in 16 at bats, scored six runs and drove in one run. The Jamesport, NY native had a .625 slugging percentage and a .588 on base percentage and was four for four in steals. He was also perfect in the field with seven putouts and 13 assists.

The softball team went 2-2, splitting against both Elmira and Potsdam State. First-year student Caroine Kieltyka earned "Co-Rookie of the Week" as she batted .438 for the Saints. The New Britain, CT native recorded seven hits in 16 at bats, three RBI's and a slugging percentage of .688.

Four Saints and a Crew Earn Weekly Honors

March 28:  Four St. Lawrence University student-athletes and a crew were honored by the Liberty League Monday afternoon for their performances during the week.

St. Lawrence Is 19th in Learfield Cup Standings

St. Lawrence University's athletic program ranks 19th in the 2010-11 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup after the first compilation of winter NCAA tournament results.

Fellows, Fredericks Named 2010 Hoffmann First-Year Scholar-Athletes

Feb. 3:  The St. Lawrence University Athletic Department has announced that Maggie Fellows '13 and Jacob Fredericks '13 are the recipients of the Hoffmann Outstanding First-Year Scholar-Athlete Awards.

Fellows, a sophomore on the women's crew team, is the women's recipient for 2010.  The Warwick, MA native posted a 3.97 grade point average in her first year at St. Lawrence.  Rowing five-seat in the women's Varsity eight, Maggie helped power the crew to its third consecutive Liberty League Championship in the spring of 2010.  The rookie also helped her team earn a silver medal at the New York State Collegiate Championships and a bid to the NCAA Championships.

Fellows, who posted the fastest 2k erg time of the women in that crew, currently holds the school record for the 6k distance.  Maggie's efforts landed her an invitation to the U.S. Rowing U-23 Team selection camp this past November.

Fredericks earned the men's scholar-athlete award thanks to a 3.81 grade point average in his first year at St. Lawrence.  Jacob contributed at the NYSCTC Indoor Track and Field Championships, as he was sixth in the triple jump, helping the Saints to second place in the team standings.

Fredericks went on to produce points in three events at the Liberty League Outdoor Championships, including a second place finish in the triple jump.  He ranked first on the team in the 400m hurdles and second in the 55m hurdles, 60m hurdles and triple jump throughout the 2009-10 season.
