Three Saints Earn Weekly Conference Recognition

Sept. 18: The Liberty League announced its weekly award winners on Monday, and three St. Lawrence University student-athletes were honored for their athletic accomplishments.

For the second consecutive week, senior Sam Rakoc was named the Liberty League's Performer of the Week for men's cross country.  Rakoc was the fifth Division III runner overall as well as the top Liberty League runner, at the Rochester Invitational in 25:54.9.

First-year student Ella Martin was named the women's cross country Performer of the Week thanks to her strong showing at the Rochester Invitational.  The rookie was the top Division III runner in 22:00, good for 10th overall, and led St. Lawrence to a second place finish in the team standings.

Meanwhile, first-year student Emily DePoy earned women's soccer Rookie of the Week honors.  The Clifton Park, NY native scored her first collegiate goal against Potsdam State, then added another against Elmira, helping the Saints to wins against both opponents.

The women's tennis team plays Hamilton College today at 4:00pm while the volleyball squad visits Clarkson to open the 2012 conference season at 7:00pm.  It will be busy on campus for "Family Weekend," as field hockey, football and both men's and women's soccer host games.  Field hockey faces Union and Vassar, while football opens Liberty League play against Union College.  Women's soccer faces Skidmore on Saturday, while the nationally-ranked men's squad faces SUNY Canton on Sunday.

Sept. 11: The Liberty League announced its weekly award winners on Monday, and eight St. Lawrence University student-athletes were honored for their athletic accomplishments.

Watch 11 Saints Teams on America One in 2012-13

Aug. 28: St. Lawrence University will feature 11 teams throughout the 2012-13 athletic season on America One, beginning this fall with football, men's and women's soccer, volleyball and field hockey.

Other sports that will be broadcast online with live play-by-play commentary for a fee include men's and women's hockey, men's and women's basketball and men's and women's lacrosse.

A daily pass, allowing a viewer to watch all St. Lawrence home games on the America One calendar that day, will be $8.00 per day.  Meanwhile, season passes will be available for football ($30), basketball ($60) and hockey ($75).

Ten Assistant Coaches Hired for the 2012-13 Season

Aug. 9: Ten new graduate assistant coaches are set to join the St. Lawrence University athletic department for the 2012-13 season.  

Adam Terko '12 will join the Nordic skiing staff following a four-year career racing with the Saints.  Terko, who served as captain in his senior season, was the Rookie of the Year as a first-year student and earned the Axtell Award in the spring of 2012.

Alex Norden, a 2010 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, joins the Saints staff as the assistant alpine ski coach.  She was a four-year member of the Wildcats varsity alpine ski team, and also participated in track and field at UNH.

Victoria Lederer, a five-time All-American swimmer from Kenyon College, will work as the assistant swim coach.  Lederer, who served as captain in 2009, was a member of the 2008 and 2009 NCAA Division III National Championship teams. 

Lederer will be joined by Jesse Maple, a former diver and 2008 graduate of the University of Minnesota, as he will coach the Saints' divers.  Maple was a member of the Gophers' 2005 Big 10 Championship team after transferring from the University of Alabama. 

Daniel Higgins, a four-year varsity letter winner from Ithaca College, will be on the sidelines with the St. Lawrence football team this fall.  A two-time first-team Empire 8 all-star, he served as the assistant offensive line coach in the fall of 2011 at his alma mater.     

St. Lawrence Honors Senior Student-Athletes at Annual Dinner

May 21: The St. Lawrence University Athletic Department honored over 150 senior student-athletes on Tuesday, May 15 at the annual Senior Student-Athlete Awards Dinner, held on campus at Eben Holden.  The event honored the Class of 2012 for their academic and athletic accomplishments, as well as their service to the St. Lawrence and Canton communities.

Wally Johnson Named 2012 Pete Nevins Award Winner

Wally Johnson, Director of Athletic Media Relations at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY; will receive the Pete Nevins Award for Distinguished Achievement at the 2012 ECAC-Sports Information Directors Association Workshop in Pittsburgh.

The award was approved by the ECAC-SIDA Executive Board in 2007. That year, Pete Nevins, the long-time sports information director at East Stroudsburg University, who was a legend in the industry for more than three decades, passed away.

The award is presented to an individual in recognition of his or her advancement of the field of athletic communications and advocacy for intercollegiate athletics. The winner must have served at least 25 years in the sports information field, and be either a current or former member of ECAC-SIDA. The award is presented at the discretion of the ECAC-SIDA board, and only one winner can be named per-year.

Now in his 38th year at St. Lawrence, Johnson was named Director of Athletic Media Relations in 1999 and has been the University's sports information contact since 1975.
