Novice Boat Remains Unbeaten, In NYS Grand Final

May 2: The St. Lawrence University men's crew team was led by the men's novice eight boat on Saturday in the first of two days of the 2009 New York State Rowing Championships, held in Whitney Point, NY.

In the Men's Novice 8 event, the only race to enjoy good water conditions, the Saints continued to enjoy their successes, as they have not been beaten in 2009. In their heat on Saturday, St. Lawrence dominated over Marist, Ithaca, RIT and Army to earn a lane in the grand final on Sunday morning, where they will look to remain undefeated.

St. Lawrence's novice crew included first years Justin Painter (Kattskill Bay, NY/Northwood), Will Schrade (Slingerlands, NY/Christian Brothers Academy), Brent Underwood (Slovang, CA/Santa Ynez Valley Union), Jamie Cook (Madison, CT/The Williams School), Michael MacNeil (Milton, MA/Thayer Academy), Jon Williams (Higganum, CT/Kent School), Griffin Green (Buffalo, NY/Hutchinson Central Tech), Justin Raffaeli (Pound Ridge, CT/Kent School) and rookie coxswain Mike Cianca (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Southerland).

The men's varsity eight face much rougher water conditions and placed sixth in their heat, with Ithaca, Iona and Marist taking the top three spots, respectively. The Saints will compete in tomorrow's petite final.

Conference Championships Canceled Due to Conditions

Apr. 25: The 2009 Liberty League Rowing Championships, hosted by St. Lawrence University, were indefinitely suspended Saturday morning after wind caused unsafe course conditions in the last 1,000 meters of the 2,000 meter course on the St. Lawrence River in Waddington, NY.

A Southwest wind of 15 mph and gusts of over 30 mph began affecting the course shortly after 9:00am, creating extremely treacherous conditions. The last successful race was the first heat of the Women's Novice 8 event.
Three full races were able to finish their respective pieces, including the heats of the Women's Varsity 8 and the Men's Varsity 8, as well as the Men's Novice 8.

In the first event of the day, St. Lawrence University's Women's Varsity 8 crew defeated Vassar College in the first of two heats in the event, crossing the finish line with a time of 6:09.7, while the Brewers finished at 6:38.9. William Smith College then took top honors in the second heat with a time of 6:09.5, while Skidmore placed second at 6:18.5.

In the Men's Varsity 8 heats, Hobart's Varsity crew defeated their JV crew as well as Vassar's entry with a time of 5:27.8. The Statesmen's second entry clocked in at 5:33.4, while the Brewers completed the race with a time of 5:40.2. The second heat included St. Lawrence University and Union College, who battled throughout with the Saints finishing just ahead of the Dutchmen in a time of 5:35.2, while Union crossed at 5:36.5.

Saints Continue to Impress Against Skidmore, Union

Apr. 19: In preparations for next weekend's Liberty League Championships, the St. Lawrence University men's crew team competed with conference opponents Union and Skidmore Colleges on Sunday afternoon, with the Scarlet and Brown prevailing in each of the three races on the Mohawk River in Schenectady, NY.

In the first men's race of the morning, St. Lawrence's Men's Novice Eight won their fourth consecutive race and continue to be unbeaten in the spring season, winning the 2,000-meter piece with a time of 6:16, while Skidmore placed second (6:41) and Union finished third (6:51).

St. Lawrence's novice crew included first years Justin Painter (Kattskill Bay, NY/Northwood), Will Schrade (Slingerlands, NY/Christian Brothers Academy), Brent Underwood (Slovang, CA/Santa Ynez Valley Union), Jamie Cook (Madison, CT/The Williams School), Michael MacNeil (Milton, MA/Thayer Academy), Jon Williams (Higganum, CT/Kent School), Griffin Green (Buffalo, NY/Hutchinson Central Tech), Justin Raffaeli (Pound Ridge, CT/Kent School) and rookie coxswain Mike Cianca (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Southerland).

In the first of two varsity races for the men, St. Lawrence took a decisive win over the Thoroughbreds in the Men's Novice Four event, crossing the finish line at 7:28.6, while Skidmore raced to a time of 7:41.8.

Saints Sweep Races at Hamilton

Apr. 18: In their first of two straight days of competition, the St. Lawrence University men's crew team raced Hamilton College in a 2,000-meter piece on the Erie Canal in Rome, NY Saturday afternoon, with the Saints winning each of the three races to sweep the day.

In the Men's Varsity Eight race, the Scarlet and Brown's novice crew defeated both Hamilton's varsity as well as St. Lawrence's varsity with a time of 6:09.33. The Saints edged the Continentals, who clocked in at 6:09.77, while St. Lawrence's varsity squad placed third with a time of 6:17.73.

Saints Have Strong Performances at Ithaca

Apr. 11: The St. Lawrence University men's crew team enjoyed a successful day on the water on Saturday as the varsity and novice crew teams competed against Ithaca and Hamilton Colleges on the Cayuga Inlet, where the teams raced a 2000-meter piece.

In the men's varsity eight race, Ithaca won the event with a time of 6:41.4, while the Saints crew finished with a time of 6:58.7, defeating Hamilton by more than ten seconds as the Continentals crossed the finish line with a time of 7:08.8.

The boat contained sophomore David MacClaren (Madison, CT/Stratton Mountain School), senior Andrew Kraus (Devon, PA/Westtown), senior Matt Sonagere (Auburn, ME/Edward Little), senior Seth Corliss (Castleton, VT/Fair Haven Union), senior Mike Syslo (Shrewsbury, MA/St. John's School), sophomore Nick Blum (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville East), senior Jullian Holland (Falls Village, CT/Housatonic Valley Regional), senior Liam Delahanty (Francestown, NH/Conval Regional) and sophomore coxswain Allison Webster (Lincoln, MA).

The Saints' novice crew continued its winning ways and defeated both Ithaca and Hamilton in the men's novice eight event, finishing with a time of 6:56.9, well ahead of the Bombers' time of 7:12.7 and Hamilton's final time of 7:53.8.

Saints Open 2009 Competition with Races at RIT

Mar. 30: The St. Lawrence University men's crew team opened their spring schedule against the Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday morning and had several impressive performances to highlight the event as the two teams competed on a 1,700-meter on the Genesee River.

The Scarlet and Brown entered one boat in the men's novice 8 boat race and the defeated both of RIT's entries with a time of 6:04.52. RIT's ‘A' boat finished with a time of 6:23.27, while their ‘B' crew clocked in at 6:28.27 to claim third place in the event.

Novice Boat Shines at Head of the Fish

Oct. 26: In the final race of the fall 2008 season, the St. Lawrence University men's crew team found the novice men leading the way at the 23rd annual Head of the Fish on Sunday in Saratoga Springs, NY, as three novice crews placed in the top three of their respective races to cap off an impressive beginning of the team's 2008-09 campaign.

In the collegiate men's 1x race, first year Will Schrade (Slingerlands, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) finished first in the Collegiate Men's 1x race with a time of 13:43.75, more than 20 seconds ahead of his closest competitor. The race kicked off an impressive showing for the novice men, as the men's novice 4+ crew finished third in a field of 20 crews with a time of 12:21.07, placing just behind Williams' and Colgate's A boats. St. Lawrence's crew included coxswain Colin Loomis (Waddington, NY/Madrid-Waddington), first years Justin Painter (Kattskill Bay, NY/Northwood School), John Williams (Higganum, CT/Kent School), and Mike MacNeil (Milton, MA/Thayer Academy), as well as junior Kyle Dowman (Potsdam, NY/Vermont Academy).

Rowers Compete at Head of the Charles Regatta

Oct. 21: The St. Lawrence University men's crew team travelled to Boston, MA, this past weekend to compete in the 44th Annual Head of the Charles Regatta on the Charles River, where the men's varsity eight rowed to a 31st place overall in the collegiate category, which included crews from Division I, II and III institutions, as well as collegiate club programs.

"Our men rowed extremely well for this time of year and the conditions they faced," said Saints head coach George Repicky. "We took on considerable water at the start and faced very windy conditions throughout the course of the race, but I thought in comparison to the teams we compete against in the conference, we rowed very well."

Saints competing in the race included sophomore coxswain Alyssa Halton (Ithaca, NY/Lansing H.S.), seniors Matt Sonagere (Auburn, ME, Edward Little H.S.), and Andrew Kraus, sophomore Dave MacClaren (Madison, CT/Stratton Mountain School), seniors Seth Corliss (Castleton, VT/Fair Haven Union), Jullian Holland (Falls Village, CT/Housatonic Valley Regional), and Liam Delahanty (Francestown, NH/Conval Regional H.S.), and sophomores Nick Blum (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville East) and Jose Colagrossi (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich H.S.).

Men's 4+ Wins Silver at Head of Genesee

Oct. 13: The St. Lawrence University men's varsity 4+ crew earned a silver medal was the highlight of the weekend as the Saints competed at the 2008 Head of the Genesee Regatta on Sunday at the Genesee Waterways Center in Rochester, NY.

The two-day event focused on providing a competitive rowing event for Masters, Open, High School, and Collegiate crews. The Saints, competing in the collegiate races, also found themselves up against open crews from all over the Northeast. Many of the high school teams competed on Saturday.

The men's 4+ crew finished in second place out of five collegiate crews with a time of 18:35.77. Winning the collegiate gold medal was RIT, who crossed the finish line at 18:23.56. St. Lawrence finished ahead of Division II Mercyhurst, who placed third. The Saints' finish earned themselves Liberty League "Co-Boat of the Week" honors for their finish.

In the men's varsity eight race, the Scarlet and Brown finished eighth out of the 13 collegiate crews competing with a time of 17:01.27. Ithaca's ‘A' crew was the top collegiate finisher in the event, clocking in at 15:43.34.

St. Lawrence will travel to Boston, MA, this weekend to compete in the 44th annual Head of the Charles regatta this weekend on the Charles River. The Saints will compete on Sunday of the two-day event.

Saints Look Sharp in Opening Races of 2008-09

Oct. 4: The St. Lawrence University men's crew team kicked off their 2008-09 season on Saturday at the 2008 Hobart and William Smith Challenge in Geneva, NY. Three 5000m races, which included Varsity 4, Novice 8 and Novice 4, were contested during the challenge which was held on the Seneca-Cayuga Canal.

The Saints' Novice 4 boat clocked in at 17:40, only three seconds behind the winning boat from Marietta (OH). The Scarlet and Brown narrowly defeated Liberty League rival, Hobart, by one second in the six-boat race.

Competing for the Scarlet and Brown in the men's opening race was first year coxswain Colin Loomis (Waddington, NY/Madrid-Waddington), rookies Will Schrade (Slingerlands, NY/Christian Brothers Academy), John Williams (Higganum, CT/Kent School), and Justin Painter (Kattskill Bay, NY/Northwood School), and junior Kyle Dowman (Potsdam, NY/Vermont Academy).

St. Lawrence also collected a fifth place finish in the Novice 8 race with a time of 16:06. Marietta's top two boats took first and second with times of 14:49 and 15:16, respectively, followed by RIT (15:19) and Hobart (15:24).
