May 10: The St. Lawrence University men's crew team's season came to an abrupt end on Sunday as high winds made for rough course conditions, forcing the cancelation of the remaining races at the 2009 ECAC Championships in Camden, NJ.
The men's novice eight crew was the only boat to find its way through the 2,000-meter piece on Sunday, placing second in their heat behind Trinity, who clocked in at 6:07.40. St. Lawrence completed the course in a time of 6:13.00, while UVA came in third, followed by Middlebury.
With their finish, the Scarlet and Brown earned a slot in the Grand Final of the event, scheduled for later on in the day, where it became a victim to the high winds and cancelation.
St. Lawrence's novice crew included first years Justin Painter (Kattskill Bay, NY/Northwood), Will Schrade (Slingerlands, NY/Christian Brothers Academy), Brent Underwood (Slovang, CA/Santa Ynez Valley Union), Jamie Cook (Madison, CT/The Williams School), Michael MacNeil (Milton, MA/Thayer Academy), Jon Williams (Higganum, CT/Kent School), Griffin Green (Buffalo, NY/Hutchinson Central Tech), Justin Raffaeli (Pound Ridge, CT/Kent School) and rookie coxswain Mike Cianca (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Southerland).
The race wraps up an incredible season for the men's novice crew, who were both Liberty League and New York State champions, and sets up for a very promising 2009-10 campaign.
