Senior forward Carolyn Demougeot
scored her fifth goal of the season off a corner kick with just under 20
minutes to play in regulation time and Vassar College made it stand up for a
2-1 victory over St. Lawrence in the 2010 Liberty League opener for both teams
at SLU's Sandy MacAllaster Field Friday afternoon.
Demougeot was left unchecked in
the middle as Elysa Greenberger sent a corner kick into the box from the left
corner. Demougeot controlled the ball and snapped it back inside the left post
for the game winning goal at 70:36 as Vassar improved to 6-2-0 overall and
1-0-0 in league play.
St. Lawrence, which had a four
game winning streak snapped and is now 6-2-0, 0-1-0, came back from an early
1-0 deficit after Vassar sophomore Keiko Kurita scored her first goal of the
season on a header off a corner kick from Greenberger just 8:52 into the game.
The Saints tied it up at 16:31
as junior Elena Rogers scored her second of the season after a Saint corner
kick at 16:31. Katherine Polido served the ball into the box and while Rogers'
first shot was blocked, she got her own rebound and put it past Vassar goalie
Lexi Hutton to tie it at 1-1.
"That was a tough one for us
today," said Saint coach Franco Bari. "Vassar did a great job of capitalizing
on its restart opportunities and we were just a little off today and couldn't
get to passes or balls that we usually get to. Our goal was a strong one and
initially helped up build some momentum, but we couldn't keep it going.
