Vassar Tips Saints in Liberty League Opener, 2-1

Senior forward Carolyn Demougeot scored her fifth goal of the season off a corner kick with just under 20 minutes to play in regulation time and Vassar College made it stand up for a 2-1 victory over St. Lawrence in the 2010 Liberty League opener for both teams at SLU's Sandy MacAllaster Field Friday afternoon.

Demougeot was left unchecked in the middle as Elysa Greenberger sent a corner kick into the box from the left corner. Demougeot controlled the ball and snapped it back inside the left post for the game winning goal at 70:36 as Vassar improved to 6-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in league play.

St. Lawrence, which had a four game winning streak snapped and is now 6-2-0, 0-1-0, came back from an early 1-0 deficit after Vassar sophomore Keiko Kurita scored her first goal of the season on a header off a corner kick from Greenberger just 8:52 into the game.

The Saints tied it up at 16:31 as junior Elena Rogers scored her second of the season after a Saint corner kick at 16:31. Katherine Polido served the ball into the box and while Rogers' first shot was blocked, she got her own rebound and put it past Vassar goalie Lexi Hutton to tie it at 1-1.

"That was a tough one for us today," said Saint coach Franco Bari. "Vassar did a great job of capitalizing on its restart opportunities and we were just a little off today and couldn't get to passes or balls that we usually get to. Our goal was a strong one and initially helped up build some momentum, but we couldn't keep it going.

Rogers, van Geldern Lead Saints Past Elmira 1-0

Elena Rogers scored her first goal of the season 26:26 into the game and junior goalkeeper Abby van Geldern made it stand up for her fourth straight shutout and sixth of the season as St. Lawrence University's women's soccer team completed a weekend sweep with a 1-0 win over Elmira on Sunday.
