Saints Face Strong Schedule Heading into 2009 Season

Coming off the most successful season in five years, St. Lawrence University women's soccer coach Franco Bari has put a challenge before his 2009 team.

Women's Soccer Kicks Off 2009 Athletic Year

August 27: St. Lawrence University's women's soccer team will kick off its 30th year as an intercollegiate program and the 2009-10 athletic year when it hosts Cortland in the first official NCAA contest of the new year on MacAllaster Field Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 4 p.m.

Emily Johnson Named Assistant Coach

July 1: Emily Johnson, an All America player and member of the 1991 Division III National Champion women's soccer team at Ithaca College, has been named assistant women's soccer coach at St. Lawrence University.

Hynes Earns All Region Honors

Dec. 9: Sophomore back Nicky Hynes continued to receive accolades for her performance this season as she was named to the NSCAA/adidas All-New York Region First Team on Tuesday.


Hynes (Carleton Place, ONT/The Kent School) anchored a defense that only allowed 77 shots on goal, the lowest in the conference, 13 goals, and earned nine shutouts. The defender also recorded one goal and two assists en route to the Saints 10-5-3 overall record, which also included their first trip to the Liberty League Tournament in five years. 


Hynes earned Defensive Performer of the Week honors after securing a defensive line that only allowed two shots on goal in two games. Her efforts placed the Saints among the best in the country defensively throughout much of the season.

 

Five Saints Earn All Conference Honors

Nov. 6: Five Members of the St. Lawrence University women’s soccer team were recognized for their contributions to the team’s success Thursday morning as three Saints were named to the All-Conference team, and two players were Liberty League Honorable Mentions.


Sophomore defender Nicky Hynes (Carleton Place, ONT/The Kent School) led the way for the Scarlet and Brown as the only Saint to be named to the Liberty League First Team. Hynes anchored a defense that only allowed 76 shots on goal, the second lowest in the conference, 12 goals, and earned nine shutouts. The defender also recorded one goal and two assists en route to the Saints 10-4-3 regular season record. Hynes earned Defensive Performer of the Week honors after only allowing two shots on goal in two games.


Senior captain Lauren Sischo (Rodman, NY/South Jefferson) and Junior midfielder Becca Townsend (Stockton, NJ/North Hunterdon H.S.) were both conference Second Team selections. Sischo tallied three goals and added two assists for eight points so far this season. The senior also tallied a game-winner earlier in the season. The North Country native was recently named to the 2008 ESPN Academic All-District Third Team for her efforts both on the field and in the classroom.

NO. 5 Herons Hold Off Saints in Liberty League Semifinal, 1-0

Nov. 7: An impressive second half by the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team was not enough to overcome nationally-ranked William Smith's 1-0 lead in the first half as the Herons held on to win in the Liberty League semifinal Friday afternoon on Cozzens Field in Geneva, NY.

The Herons, currently fifth in the latest NSCAA/adidas National Coaches Poll and the Liberty League regular season champion, improved to 13-1-3 overall, while the Saints conclude the season with a 10-5-3 record, their best in five years.

Saints Fall to Cortland in Overtime, 2-1

Oct. 31: Cortland's Bridgette DeSantis scored two goals, including the game winner in overtime, to lead the Cortland Red Dragons to a 2-1 win over the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team under the lights in Cortland, NY on Friday night.

The Saints suffered their first out of conference loss of the year to fall 10-4-3 in the regular season, while Cortland improved to 7-6-4 overall.

Saints Earn First Playoff Birth Since 2003; Fall to Skidmore, 2-0

Oct. 26: The St. Lawrence University women's soccer team earned the fourth seed in the Liberty League Tournament on Sunday afternoon despite falling to Skidmore College 2-0 in Liberty League action at Wachenheim Field in Saratoga Springs, NY. It is the first time in five years that the Scarlet and Brown have made it to the tournament.

The Saints, fell to 10-3-3 overall and 3-3-1 in the conference following their second straight loss, while the Thoroughbreds also clinched a playoff berth, earning the third seed, as they improved to 12-5-2 overall and a 4-2-1 Liberty League record. St.

No. 25 Saints Fall to Union 2-1 in Second Loss of Season

Oct. 25: The nationally-ranked St. Lawrence University women's soccer team suffered their second loss of the season on Saturday afternoon as the Union Dutchwomen edged the Saints 2-1 in Liberty League action at College Park in Schenectady, NY.

Union improves to 12-3-1 overall with their fourth straight victory and also claim sole possession of second place in the conference and will be the second seed in the Liberty League tournament with a 5-1-0 mark, while #25 St. Lawrence falls to 10-2-3 and 3-2-1 in the league as the Dutchwomen ended the Saints' five game undefeated streak.

Saints Tie No. 11 Ithaca, 1-1

Oct. 18: A late game goal by nationally-ranked Ithaca College forced the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team into overtime Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field, where the Saints and Bombers played to a 1-1 tie in a critical in-region contest in Canton, NY.

The Saints, who are currently fourth in the region, now stand at a 10-1-3 record, while the Bombers, who are ranked second regionally and 11th in the most recent NSCAA/adidas National Poll, move to a 9-1-1 overall record.
