Saints Open Spring Season with Win in Arizona

March 21: St. Lawrence University's women's golf team, ranked 16th nationally heading into the spring portion of the season, got that spring schedule off to a good start with a win in the George Fox Invitational Tournament to conclude a week in Arizona.


The Saints had a two-day total of 656 on the par 73, 5804 yard Vista Course at the Westbrook Village Golf Course in Peroia, AZ to edge host George Fox University, which had a 658 total and the University of The Redlands, CA which was third with a 681 total.


Kristin Berretta had the low round of the tournament, opening with a two-over par 75 on Friday and finished with a 154 total to earn medalist honors. Berretta shot 79 on Saturday. Alair Muzzatti was the second low Saint scorer with rounds of 79 and 82 for a 160 total while Melissa Snizek shot 80 and 84 for a 164 total. Cait Cunningham completed the Saint scoring with rounds of 90 and 88 for a 178 total.


Lindsay Cone, who was one of the Saints' top golfers in the fall, missed the Arizona trip while competing for the Saint ski team, becoming the first Saint skier to win an NCAA title when she won the women's giant slalom. She will compete with the golf team in the rest of the spring tournaments.

Cone Finishes Fourth at Middlebury Invitational


Oct. 5: St. Lawrence University's Lindsay Cone hopped off a plane from Chile on Wednesday and went out Saturday and shot one of only three rounds in the 70s on Middlebury's Ralph Myhre Golf Course, eventually finishing fourth and helping the Saints to a fourth place team finish at the Middlebury Invitational.

Cone, who was in Chile training with the US Ski Team, shot rounds of 79 and 81 on the par-71 course and finished with a 160 total, tying for fourth in the field. It was her third top ten finish of the season and her best thus far as a collegiate player.

Alair Muzzatti shot rounds of 83 and 86 for a 169 total and finished 12th, while junior Kristin Berretta bounced back from a 90 in Saturday's round with a solid 83 on Sunday and finished tied for 16th at 173.

Melissa Snizek rounded out the Saint scoring with grounds of 83 and 92 for a 175 total while Beth kessenich was the fifth Saint golfer in the tournament and shot rounds of 112 and 106 to finish tied for 34th.

Middlebury won the tournament with a 648 total with Amherst second at 667, Mount Holyoke third at 673 and the Saints fourth at 677. Williams was fifth at 683 with Vassar sixth at 703 and NYU seventh at 799.


The Saints will complete the fall portion of the schedule at Williams Oct. 11-12.

Snizek Leads Saints To 4th at Mt. Holyoke

Sept. 22: First year Melissa Snizek had a low Sunday round of 77 to finish eighth in a 79-golfer field, helping St. Lawrence University's women's golf team to a solid fourth place finish in the 13-team Mt. Holyoke Invitational.


Snizek carded her third straight top ten finish and was one of only four golfers to break 80 on the challenging 5880-yeard par-72 Orchards course on Sunday. Her 77 was the second best round of the second day and jumped her significantly up the leader board after she opened with an 85, third among Saint golfers in Saturday's round.


The Saints finished with a 665 total, just one stroke behind third place University of Hartford and two behind second place Mt. Holyoke. Amherst won the event with a 657 total for the best four out of five scores on each day of the tournament.


Lindsey Cone shot rounds of 84 and 82 for a 166 total and was tied for 19th while sophomore Alair Muzzatti shot back-to-back 84s and was tied for 23rd with a 168 total. Kristin Berretta completed the Saint top four, finishing 26th as she bounced back from an 87 on Saturday with a solid round of 82 on Sunday. Molly Patterson was the fifth Saint golfer in the tournament and shot rounds of 109 and 104.


The Saints will return to action at Middlebury on Oct. 4-5.

Cone Leads Saints To 3rd at William Smith

Sept. 14: First year players Lindsay Cone and Melissa Snizek each had top ten finishes as St. Lawrence University's women's golf team finished third in the 11-team William Smith Invitational at Clifton Springs Golf Club in Clifton Springs on Sunday.


None of the Saints broke 80 on a tough 5820 yard par-72 layout on Saturday, but Cone had the second best round of the day on Sunday with a 77, two strokes behind medalist Hannah Schnnau-Taylor of Allegheny. Cone finished tied for fifth with rounds of 85 and 77 for a 162 total while Snizek, who shot 84-80 was tied for ninth at 164.


Allegheny won the tournament with a four-player total of 639 strokes while Vassar was second at 662 and the Saints third with a 669 total, one stroke better than fourth place Nazareth.


Alair Muzzatti was the third Saint finisher with rounds of 82 and 87 for a 169 total, good for a tie for 13th while Kristin Berretta tied for 24th with rounds of 89 and 86 and a 175 total score.


Beth Kessenich, playing in her first collegiate tournament, battled nerves and the tough course on Saturday, but played a much better round on Sunday and finished 56th as the fifth Saint golfer.

Saints Set Record on Day One, Win Invitational

Sept. 7: St. Lawrence University's women's golf team didn't quite match their record round of day one of the ninth annual St. Lawrence University Collegiate Invitational in Sunday's second round, but their team total of 334 was still the best of the day and gave the Saints a 25-stroke win over a seven-team field.

The Saints followed Saturday's team-record round of 316 for their top four golfers with a 334 on Sunday for a 650 total. Cortland was second at 675, Nazareth third at 681 and NYU fourth at 709 among the seven competing teams.

Saint sophomore Alair Muzzatti finished second overall, shooting identical 79s for a 158 total on the 5809 yard, par-72 St. Lawrence University Golf Course. NYU's Theresa Apoznanski was the medalist in the tournament with rounds of 78 and 79 and a 157 total.


All four Saint scorers finished in the top eight in the tournament as Kristin Berretta tied for third with rounds of 78 and 83 and a 151 total, and rookies Melissa Snizek and Lindsay Cone had solid collegiate debuts. Snizek shot 85 on Sunday for a 165 total and tied for sixth while Cone had a 79-87 total for a 166 total and was eighth.

Cait Cunningham was the fifth Saint golfer and shot 86-90 for a 176 total and was tied for 19th in the 41 player field.

Snizek, Caligiore Play in Women's Amateur

July 10: Melissa Snizek, who will be a sophomore on the St. Lawrence University women’s golf team, and Aimee Caligiore, an incoming first-year player, both made the cut in the 2009 New York State Women’s Amateur Golf Tournament and both finished in the top 20.


Snizek finished tied for 15th in the 70-player tournament at the Drumlins Golf Club in Syracuse while Caligiore tied for 17th. A total of 39 players made the cut at 171 or better for 36 holes.


Snizek shot rounds of 82, 79 and 82 for a 243 total while Caligiore was one stroke back at 244 with rounds of 82, 82 and 80 in the three day tournament.

Mary Lawrence

Now in her 11th season as the head coach of St. Lawrence men's and women's golf, Mary Lawrence has built both programs into highly competitive teams and took both teams to the NCAA Division III Championships in just their fourth season as varsity sports. The Saint men's team has made two NCAA Division III tournament appearances since being resurrected as a varsity sports in 1999-2000, while the Saint women's team has made three tournament appearances since being added as a varsity sport in 1999-2000, including back-to-back appearances in 2008 and 2009.

A Canton native and a LPGA professional, Lawrence won the first Women's Senior Golf Tour qualifying school tournament last spring and played on the tour during the summer. She competed on the LPGA tour from 1978-83 and was the winner of five professional events.She was named  LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Northeast Coach of the Year in 2006.

Prior to turning professional, she was the winner of the New York State Junior Championship in 1973 and in 1977 was New York State Women's Champion, a USGA Women's Amateur medallist and a Florida Intercollegiate Champion. A graduate of the University of Miami and a first-team All America in 1977, she was part of two NCAA National Championship teams at Miami. She has played in nine USGA Women's US Opens and was LPGA Teaching Division Western Section champion in 1993 and played in the 1994 Women's British Open.
