Brockport Halts Saints' Willing Streak, hands Team 39-36 Loss

Jan. 11: A second half comeback attempt by the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team was not enough to overcome their 27-13 halftime deficit, as the Saints fell to The College of Brockport 39-36 in the Tuttle North Gym in Brockport, NY early Sunday afternoon.

The Saints suffered their first loss since late November and fall to a 7-3 overall mark to conclude the non-conference portion of their regular season schedule, while Brockport improves to a 5-4 record.

Sophomore Abby Stanton (Avon, NY/Avon Central) recorded her second double-double of her career, tallying 11 points, including three buckets from three-point land, and grabbing 14 boards, while senior Katie Palmer (Bourne, MA/Falmouth Academy) added eight points and seven rebounds. The Scarlet and Brown improve to a 5-2 overall record, while the Bombers fall from a .500 mark to a record of 4-5 for the season.

Palmer (Bourne, MA/Falmouth Academy) and Stanton's (Avon, NY/Avon Central) efforts were complimented in the second half by first-year student Casey Capello (Hanover, MA/Archbishop Williams). The rookie came off the bench and spent only eight minutes on the floor but scored 10 points, shooting 3-for-4 from the field and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc and the line, while also grabbing three rebounds and steal. Stanton recorded her first collegiate double-double after snatching 11 boards while Palmer collected nine.

The opening moments saw both teams make their first shots, but the Saints jumped out to an early 6-4 lead after senior captain Lauren Sischo (Rodman, NY/South Jefferson) and Palmer drained back-to-back threes after only a minute of action. A three point play by Palmer nearly five minutes later was encouraging to the young Saints' squad, as they quickly found themselves with a double-digit lead, 18-8, with 12:10 remaining in the half.

Norwich was led by Tara Stevenson, who scored a career-high 18 points and grabbed five rebounds. Laurel McWilliams added 13 points for the Cadets, while Ally Daniels chipped in 10.

With the win, St. Lawrence improves to a winning 3-2 record, while the Mariners fall to 1-4 in the season.
Palmer (Bourne, MA/Falmouth Academy) was 9-of-13 from the floor and canned 5-of-7 from three-point range in her offensive efforts, while also shooting 4-for-5 from the line. The senior also added a team high eight rebounds and three steals.

While St. Lawrence never relinquished the lead, a flurry of missed shots in the middle of the period allowed the Mariners to creep up as they scored eight points to the Saints' two to get within four with 7:10 remaining in the first.

Four Saints Score in Double Digits in Win Over Plattsburgh State

Dec. 2: St. Lawrence University sophomore guard Abby Stanton recorded a team-high 17 points and junior Brittany Parham, senior Jenna Krzemien and rookie Katherine Edgerton all scored in double digits to lead the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team to a 63-53 win over Plattsburgh State in the Saints' 2008-09 home opener at the Burkman Gymnasium.

St. Lawrence (2-2, 0-0), who played without leading scorer senior Katie Palmer (Bourne, MA/Falmouth Academy), rebounded after a tough loss to Potsdam State last Tuesday thanks to a thorough performance on both ends of the court. Meanwhile, Plattsburgh State fell to 1-4 on the young season, but was kept in the game by a tremendous offensive performance by sophomore Taylor Amarando.

Neither team's offense was able to get into a groove early, as the two teams exchanged several missed scoring opportunities in the opening minutes. After senior captain Lauren Sischo (Rodman, NY/South Jefferson) knocked down a jumper to put the home team on top 11-6, rookie Iris Santoni (Florence, MA/Northampton) added a pair of free throws to build the Saints' cushion to seven at 13-6. After Plattsburgh State failed to score on back-to-back possessions, they were forced to use a timeout when Stanton knocked down a big three pointer to push the lead to 10.

Bears Upend Saints, 50-43

Nov. 25: Senior Katie Palmer scored a game-high 18 points and led a comeback that included an 18-3 run in the middle of the second half, but it was not enough for the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team, who fell to neighboring Potsdam State 50-43 in North Country action Tuesday evening in Potsdam, NY.

The Scarlet and Brown fall to 1-2 in their 2008 campaign, while the Bears improve to a 1-1 record.

Potsdam had two players, Rachel Graf and Cortney Poirier, score in double-digits, while teammate Kelsey Shoen grabbed 13 boards for the Bears. Palmer's (Bourne, MA/Falmouth Academy) 18 points was a game-high while she also collected a team-high nine rebounds, four steals and two assists. Junior Brittany Parham (Fort Drum, NY/Indian River) added eight points to the Saints' offense, and sophomore Abby Stanton (Avon, NY/Avon Central) contributed six and the game's only block.

In the low scoring first half that contained four lead changes and three ties, neither team was able to gain more than one possession on the other in the opening minutes of the contest. The Bears stifled St. Lawrence's offense, keeping them scoreless for nearly six minutes in the middle of the first, while going on their own 11-0 tear that gave the home team a 19-11 advantage with 8:27 remaining in the period.
