Five Saints and a Crew Earn Liberty League Weekly Honors

Oct. 18: Five St. Lawrence University student-athletes and a crew were honored by the Liberty League Monday afternoon for their performances during the last week.
The men's crew team novice 8+ earned "Boat of the Week" for
its great showing at the Head of the Genesee regatta. The Saints negotiated the course in a time of
17:21.18, beating second place Union (14:44.09) by 23 seconds and third place
University of Rochester A (17:54.59) by 33 seconds. The 8+ was stroked by
Gordon Clarke and coxed by Shannon Allen.
George Alberts, Matt Farina, Evan Pierce, Mason Vogt, Ted Marr, Andy
Alexander and Kyle Benzing also powered the 8+.
On the football field, senior co-captain Marcus Washington earned "Co-Offensive
Performer of the Week". He rushed for
171 yards and a touchdown on a career-high 48 carries against Union College on
Saturday.
The nationally-ranked No. 1 men's soccer team improved to 13-0-0 overall and 6-0-0 in league play as they defeated both Union and RPI on the weekend. Senior goalkeeper Brian Abernethy earned "Defensive Performer of the Week" as recorded shutouts number 9 and 10 and ran his consecutive shutout minutes streak to 857:15. Leading the nation in goals against average, he recorded two saves against the Dutchmen and five saves against the Engineers. Also honored was freshman forward Jamal Samaroo who earned "Rookie of the Week". The Brooklyn, NY native set up a goal against Union and scored the game-winner against RPI.
On the women's side, senior goalkeeper Abby van Geldern earned "Defensive Performer of the Week" as she posted back-to-back shutouts on the weekend. The Rowayton, CT native had six saves in the Saints' 1-0 upset over nationally-ranked Union and eight saves in the 0-0 tie with RPI for her fifth and sixth shutouts of the season. The Saints improved to 3-1-2 in Liberty League play.
First-year student Katy Litka earned "Rookie of the Week" as
she led the volleyball team to a 2-2 split in Dallas, TX. The Hanover, MA native hit a team-high .261
for the weekend in four matches, recording 38 kills in 13 sets (2.92
k/set).
