Seven Saints Earn Liberty League Weekly Honors

Oct. 10: Seven St. Lawrence University student-athletes were honored by the Liberty League Monday afternoon for their performances during the last week.
The nationally-ranked No. 11 men's cross country team was runner-up at the 2011 Hoffman Invitational/Pre-Regional race on Saturday. Senior John Johnston earned "Performer of the Week" as he raced in a time of 25:39 for a second place finish. First-year student Scott Smolensky earned "Rookie of the Week" as he was the top Liberty League rookie at the race, rounding at the Saints' scoring in 57th place.
On the women's side, senior Jenna Hulton earned "Performer of the Week" as she was the top Liberty League finisher at the 2011 Hoffmann Invitational/Pre-Regional race. The East Aurora, N.Y. native was fourth overall with a time of 22:25, leading the nationally-ranked No. 26 Saints to a second place team finish. First-year student Megan Hulton earned "Rookie of the Week" as she was the top NCAA Division III rookie at the race, finishing seventh overall out of 217 runners.
The men's golf team finished in ninth place in the 16-team, 91-player Hamilton Invitational on Sunday. Junior John Harris earned "Performer of the Week" as he had his second top-ten finish of the fall season, shooting rounds of 77 and 75 for a 152 total to tie for 10th in the Invitational.
Sophomore midfielder Andrew Bednarsky scored his first goal of the season and it was the game winner as #1 St. Lawrence turned back #17 Hobart 3-0 in Geneva for its 11th straight win.
The nationally-ranked No. 1 men's soccer team improved to 11-0-0 overall and 4-0-0 in league play as they defeated No. 17 Hobart, 3-0 on Saturday. Senior goalkeeper Brian Abernethy earned "Defensive Performer of the Week" as he made some key plays in addition to four saves for his eighth shutout in 10 starts. He is second in the nation in goals against average. Sophomore midfielder Andrew Bednarsky earned "Offensive Performer of the Week" as he scored his first goal of the season and game winner against Hobart, helping the Saints to their 11th straight win.
