Five Saints and Two Crews Earn Liberty League Weekly Honors

Oct. 5: Five St. Lawrence University student-athletes and two crews were honored by the Liberty League Monday afternoon for their performances during the last week.
The St. Lawrence University men's and women's crew teams opened their fall seasons in style at the Head of the Mohawk Regatta on Saturday. The men's first novice crew earned "Boat of the Week" with a dominating performance, winning the race in the time of 13:49, which was closest to the winning varsity time which was 13:25. Gordon Clarke stroked the eight, while Shannon Allen was the coxswain. George Alberts, Matt Farina, Andy Alexander, Mason Vogt, Ted Marr, Talon Lomahquahu and Kyle Benzing also powered the boat.
The
women's novice 8+ also earned "Boat of the Week" as it made its debut
with a victory over RPI. The 8+, which
was stroked by Kat Lukens and coxed by Amy Yao, clocked in 16:36, over 2:00
minutes faster than the Engineers who finished in 19:11. Hannah Chanatry, Daniella
Stokes, Molly Haskell, Emily Hutchinson, Kelly Bartlett, Ally Friedman and
Helen Aufderheide also powered the boat.
The No. 6 ranked men's cross country team participated in
the 2011 Paul Short Invitational on Saturday in Bethlehem, PA. Senior John Johnston earned "Performer of the
Week" as he finished in 70th place in 25:21 in the Men's 8K Gold race, which
was primarily a race of Division I teams.
First-year student Aaron Tompkins earned "Rookie of the Week" as he ran
the 8K Gold race at the Paul Short Invitational in 27:12 (5:09 pace) and
finished in 271st out of over 400 runners. As a team, St. Lawrence, which was the only
Division III team competing in the Gold race, finished ahead of 12 Division I
programs.
The field hockey team posted wins against St. John Fisher and Nazareth during the week. Senior midfielder Emily Riley earned "Offensive Performer of the Week" as she led the Saints with a goal in the 3-1 win over the Cardinals and both goals in the 2-1 victory over the Golden Flyers.
The women's soccer team had a 1-0-1 week, defeating Bard and tying Vassar. Senior back Devon Shatkin earned "Defensive Performer of the Week" as she doubled her career total in goals and recorded her first assist, moving up from defense to figure in all three goals in a 3-0 win over the Raptors. Defensively, she helped the Saints go 1-0-1 allowing only a penalty kick goal, holding Bard and Vassar to a total of 13 shots between them.
The volleyball team went 4-0 in Liberty League play on the weekend defeating Union, Bard, Skidmore and Vassar. Senior Marta Johann hit .302 for the Saints, posting 47 kills (3.13 k/set) with just 15 errors in 106 attempts. Also adding eight blocks, the Montauk, N.Y. native had 8 kills in the fourth and fifth sets alone against Vassar, hitting .438 to finish the match and lead the Saints to a 5-set victory. St. Lawrence trailed 2-0 before winning the final three sets.
