Six Saints Honored by Liberty League

Nov. 23:  Six St. Lawrence University student-athletes were honored by the Liberty League for their performances in the last week.

The men's and women's cross-country teams traveled to Waterly, IA to take part in the NCAA Division III national championship on Saturday.  Senior Wendy Pavlus earned "Performer of the Week" as she successfully defended her individual national championship title with a time of 20:49.  The title marks the Tupper Lake, NY native's third career national title (two cross country, one track and field).  She remains unbeaten against Division III competition in her senior season. 

Earning "Rookie of the Week" was Amanda Moreland who was the fourth St. Lawrence finisher at the 2010 Championship race, racing the 6k course in 23:03.

On the men's side, junior Steve Kiplagat earned "Performer of the Week" as he led St. Lawrence to a third place overall finish, the program's highest finish ever at the NCAA Championships.  The Iten, Kenya native ran in 24:25, finishing in fourth place overall and only three seconds behind the winner.  Kiplagat was joined by John Johnston and Jeremy Mwenda in earning All-America honors.

The women's basketball team posted a 3-0 start to its season, beating Potsdam State on Tuesday and going undefeated at the RIT Tournament last weekend against RIT and Albany College of Pharmacy.  Earning "Co-Rookie of the Week" was Kelly Legg who scored 53 points in three games, averaging 17.7 per game.  The Fairport, NY native recorded 24 rebounds, seven steals and four blocks over the course of the week.   

Junior Trevor Saunders earned "Co-Defensive Performer of the Week" with his 11 tackles, 10 of them solo including one for a loss of four yards in the Saints NCAA game at Mount Union on Saturday. 

The Saints men's squash team competed in the Liberty League Championships last weekend, earning a second place overall finish.  First-year student Vir Seth earned "Co-Rookie of the Week" as he went 2-1 at the number two sport for St. Lawrence in his first intercollegiate competition.  He lost his first match in four games in a tight match against Rochester and then won in three against Vassar's number two and in four against Hobart's number two. 

The women's hockey team will battle the University of Vermont in Vermont on Tuesday, November 23rd.  The next Saints athletic event will be on Tuesday, November 30th when the men's and women's basketball teams host Plattsburgh State at 6:00 and 8:00, respectively.
