Five Saints Earn Liberty League Weekly Honors

Sept. 7: Five St. Lawrence University student-athletes were honored by the Liberty League Monday afternoon for their performances during the opening weekend of contests.
First-year Victor Coker Jr. was tagged as the conference's "Rookie of the Week" on the gridiron after a solid debut for the Saints along the offensive line. The Syracuse, NY native anchored the Scarlet and Brown in the trenches against nationally-ranked Ithaca College last Saturday.
Two Saints were honored for their efforts on the soccer fields last weekend. Sophomore Alex Laird led the men's soccer team to its fourth straight Lotto Tournament title and was named "Co-Defensive Performer of the Week." Laird contributed a game winning goal off a corner kick in a 2-0 victory over Roberts Wesleyan and helped the Saints hold Houghton to just six total shot attempts in the title game.
On the women's side, junior Abby van Geldern was named "Defensive Performer of the Week" as she posted a pair of shutouts to lead the women's soccer team to its third straight Lotto Tournament championship. The Royaton, CT native had four saves in a 2-0 win over Lasell on Friday and nine saves - eight coming in the second half - in a 1-0 win over Geneseo for the tournament title.
Junior Julia Croyle was also honored for her defensive play this weekend with the St. Lawrence field hockey team. Croyle was named the "Co-Defensive Performer of the Week" after an outstanding defensive effort for the Saints last weekend against Oneonta State and Utica College. The Wenham, MA native contributed an assist in the Saints' 5-1 win over Utica on Sunday and made two defensive saves on the weekend.
Finally, senior Abigail Rose was named the "Co-Performer of the Week" for her efforts on the volleyball court at the Cortland Classic. The Sausalito, CA native posted an outstanding performance on the weekend as she accumulated 22 kills, 114 assists, and 41 digs as she helped lead the Saints to a 2-2 record as they opened the season. Rose was also named to the All-Tournament Team.
Saints Athletics are gearing up for an exciting weekend, as volleyball, field hockey, football, and men's and women's golf team host events on campus. The volleyball team is hosting the annual Victory Promotions Tournament, while men's and women's golf are hosting the St. Lawrence Invitational at the St. Lawrence University Golf Course. The football team will battle Norwich on Weeks Field at Leckonby Stadium on Saturday, while field hockey takes on Hartwick at the newly-renovated North Country Field.
