Eleven Saints Earn Liberty League Weekly Accolades

Sept. 9: The Liberty League handed out its first set of weekly awards on Monday, and 11 St. Lawrence University student-athletes were among the recipients. Six Saints earned "Performer of the Week" honors while five newcomers were named "Rookie of the Week."
Junior setter Abby Rose was named the "Co-Performer of the Week" for volleyball. Rose led the Saints to the 2009 Hartwick Invitational championship this weekend as St. Lawrence finished with perfect 4-0 mark. Rose earned All-Tournament Team honors, contributing 119 assists, 15 kills, 45 digs and 10 service aces.
The St. Lawrence men's and women's cross country teams swept the league awards, as juniors Dan Ramsey and Wendy Pavlus garnered "Co-Performer of the Week" honors while first-year students Sam Rakoc and Megan Derby were "Rookie of the Week" winners. On the men's side, Ramsey led the Saints to the team title at the 2009 Plattsburgh State "Cardinal Classic" on Saturday. The Essex Junction, VT native raced in a time of 15:24 to finish in 2nd place overall out of 105 competitors. Meanwhile, Rakoc had an impressive debut with the Saints at Plattsburgh State. The Swampscott, MA native finished in 13th position overall out of 105 runners behind a time of 16:05 in his first collegiate race.
Pavlus also had an impressive race at the Saints' season opener at Plattsburgh State. The Tupper Lake, NY native was 2nd overall out of 59 competitors with a time of 18:20, leading St. Lawrence to the 2009 "Cardinal Classic" title. Derby made her presence felt in her first collegiate cross country race at Plattsburgh State as the Grafton, NY native raced in a time of 19:19, finishing in sixth place overall out of 59 runners and was the fourth St. Lawrence finisher en route to the team title.
First-year student Christopher Dris had an impressive outing against Ithaca on Saturday for the St. Lawrence football team, as he tried to help the Saints in the field position game. The New Port Richey, FL native punted 10 times for a 35.6 yard average including a long of 48 yards and one touch back to earn Liberty League "Co-Rookie of the Week" honors.
Senior Ben von Reyn and first-year student John Harris were honored for their contributions to the men's golf team's performance at the Delhi-Hamilton Quad Tournament. von Reyn is the "Co-Performer of the Week" having finished third overall with rounds of 71 and 78 for a 149 total. He earned all tournament status and had the second low round of the tournament with his 71. Harris, the "Rookie of the Week," was the second Saint finisher with rounds of 75 and 77 for a 152 total, tying for fifth in the Delhi-Hamilton Quad on Sunday.
Sophomore Brendan Gorman was tabbed the Liberty League's "Co-Offensive Performer of the Week" for men's soccer having scored four goals, tying a 12-year-old SLU record, in a 6-0 win over Potsdam and assisted on a goal in a 3-1 win over Keene State as St. Lawrence won the Lotto Tournament. Gorman was named to the All-Tournament team.
Finally, sophomore Katharine Polido and first-year student Stephanie Sayward were honored by the conference for their performances with the women's soccer squad. Polido earned "Co-Defensive Performer of the Week" honors having been effective at both ends of the field in the Lotto Tournament for the Saints, helping limit Norwich and Castleton to two shots on goal each and contributing offensively with two assists in the Castleton game and an assist on the game winner in the Norwich game. Meanwhile, Sayward earned the "Co-Rookie of the Week" award having helped St. Lawrence to its third straight Lotto Tournament title, scoring two goals and assisting on the third in a 3-0 win over Norwich and assisting on two goals in a 6-0 win over Castleton. She and Polido were named to the All-Tournament team.
