Sept. 11: The Liberty League announced its weekly award winners on Monday, and eight St. Lawrence University student-athletes were honored for their athletic accomplishments.
Senior Sam Rakoc and Harrison Sloan were named the Performer and Rookie of the Week for men's cross country as the duo led St. Lawrence to the team title at the Plattsburgh Cardinal Invitational. Rakoc was second overall in 16:19.2, while Sloan was third only four seconds back.
First-year student Margaret MacDonald was the women's cross country Rookie of the Week, as she was the individual champion at the Plattsburgh meet, her first collegiate event, in 18:51.0.
Sophomore Jack Whelan took medalist honors in the St. Lawrence Invitational with a 69, tying the best single-round score since men's golf was reinstituted as a varsity sport in 1999. Whelan is the Liberty League's Performer of the Week for men's golf, as he led the Saints to their first team title in the home event since 2003.
First-year students Ryan Grant and Kelsey West were named the Rookies of the Week for men's and women's soccer, respectively. Grant scored two game-winning goals on the weekend against #6 Rochester and Geneseo State, while West stopped 12 shots to shut out SUNY Cortland in a 0-0 double overtime tie on Saturday.
Senior Thomas Timpone won each of the deciding singles matches that helped clinch a 5-4 win for the Saints over both Rensselaer and Oneonta this weekend. For his efforts, the Concord, NH native was named the league's Performer of the Week for men's tennis.
Finally, first-year student Rebecca Doser earned volleyball's Rookie of the Week award. She was named to the All-Tournament team this weekend after totaling 44 kills and just 13 errors in 92 attempts. Besides hitting .337, she also added 9.0 blocks during the Victory Promotions Invitational.
Five teams will be in action at home this week on campus, including the volleyball team, which faces Potsdam State at 7:00pm tonight in the Burkman Gymnasium. The Saints cross country teams will host the 2012 North Country Five meet tomorrow, with men's tennis also hosting the Fall Classic this Saturday and Sunday at the Sammis Courts. The football team will take on Alfred in the final non-conference game of the season on Saturday at 1:00pm at Leckonby Stadium.
