Biswal, DMR Set Records on Day One of NYSCTC Meet

Feb. 22: St. Lawrence University’s Distance Medley Relay trimmed nearly eight seconds off the SLU record in the event and Divya Biswal improved her own record in the 60 hurdles as the 2013 New York State Collegiate Track Conference Indoor Championships got underway Friday at Ithaca College.
The DMR of Lizzie Edwards, Carly Stine, Jessica Marini and Ella Martin ran 12:02.83 to win the event by 10 seconds over second place Ithaca, setting both the facility and SLU record. The Saints earned 18 points in the 5000 as senior Caroline Raue won the race with a 17:59.64 clocking and junior Ariel Beccia was second in 18:05.85.
The Saints are second behind host Ithaca in the team scoring after day one. IC leads with 76 points with SLU second and Rochester a distant third with 28 points in a 11-team field.
In other Friday finals, Kristen Linder was second in the shot put with a throw of 11.58 meters, both Taylor Washington and Caitlyn Boreyko cleared 3.00 in the pole vault with Washington third and Boreyko placing seventh on attempts. BIswal added a third in the long jump with a 5.39 meter mark and the 4x200 relay team of Biswal, Anna Pond, Jaleigh Pier and Hannah Kinsey finished sixth in 1:48.46.
Allison Scarf was fifth in the women’s pentathlon and scored four points toward the Saint team total while Teresa Grigg, also competing in her first collegiate multi-event competition, placed eighth and scored one point. Most of Friday’s competition was devoted to preliminary races to advance to Saturday finals.
Biswal improved her own record in the 60 hurdle prelims, running 9.26 while Anna Pond and Marissa Turner each advanced to the finals in the 400 and Hannah Kinsey qualified for both the 60 and 200 meter finals
. Scarf placed second in the shot put, third in the hurdles, fourth in the long jump, fifth in the hurdles and ninth in the 800 in the five-event competition, compiling a total of 2768 points. Points in each event are awarded based on time or distance. The hurdles were her top scoring event with 759 points awarded for a time of 9.75 seconds. She had 610 points in the long jump with a 1.49 meter mark. Grigg’s best event was the 800 where she earned 555 points for a time of 2:41.57. She also scored over 500 in the long jump with a 1.40 meter mark for 512 points. Grigg finished with 2265 points in a 11-competitor field.
