Four Saints Advance at NYS Championships

Oct. 14: The St. Lawrence University women's tennis is looking to end its 2011 fall season on a high note with competition throughout the weekend at the New York State Division III Championships at the Mendon Racquet Club in Mendon, NY. Four individuals and two doubles teams advanced in competition and are still in the hunt for a championship.

Senior Hillary Drewry earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Brockport's Mackenzie Rounds in first singles to improve to 7-3 overall on the season. She will battle Elena Vahl of St. John Fisher tomorrow in the quarterfinal round.

Junior Shannon Murphy also cruised past her opponent, posting a 6-0, 6-0 win over Nazareth's Cara Yinger in fourth singles. She will go up against Ithaca College's Laurel Sallady in the quarterfinals.

First-year students Elkie Vandenbeemt and Olivia Arroyo each had byes in the first round of competition in second and third singles, respectively. Vandenbeemt will see Allison Tepas of Nazareth, while Arroyo will see Linsey Gibson of RIT in the quarterfinals.

In doubles action, the duo of Drewry and Vandenbeemt earned an 8-6 victory over RIT's Uhrinec and Vera in first doubles after receiving a bye in round one. They will meet Skidmore's Molly Nolan and Tory Engros in the semifinals tomorrow.

Murphy and Young also advanced, blanking RIT's Gibson and Pillman, 8-0 in the quarterfinal round of second doubles. The Saints duo, which had a bye in round one, will see Robyn Baird and Alex Smith of Skidmore in the semis.
