William Smith Edges Saints in Epps Semifinals
The middle of the lineup proved to be the key as William Smith College edged St. Lawrence University 5-4 in the Epps Cup semifinals at the College Squash Association national team championships at Harvard on Saturday.
The Saints, 3-13 on the season, won matches one through three and nine, but William Smith won the middle five for the match victory and advanced to the finals. The Saints will play Vassar in the Epps third place game Sunday at 3 p.m.
Brigitte Tousignant won her second straight match at nationals at one for the Saints, beating the Herons' Caroline Moxley 3-0; Jenn Hearn was a 3-0 winner over Andra Tran with 11-4, 11-5, 11-4 wins at two and Brittany Coxe battled her way to a 3-2 win over Lucia Rowe 11-6, 11-6, 8-11, 8-11, 11-9 at three.
Anne Habecker edged Kendall Harty 3-2 at four 8-11, 13-11, 11-7, 4-11, 11-6 in a key win for the Herons while Courtney Leous beat Charlotte Edson 3-0, Ginny McDermott beat Molly Caplan 12-10, 11-4, 11-5, Katherine Riordan beat Parker Benedict 12-10, 11-8, 11-9 and Sarah Cutts edged Kate Holby 4-11, 11-5, 4-11, 11-7, 11-0. Caroline Fisher won at nine for the Saints, beating Molly Doran 3-1, 11-4, 7-11, 11-4, 11-8.
