RIT Edges Saints in Liberty League Match, 3-2
Sierra Kiss scored the go-ahead goal with 16:30 to go in regulation as the Rochester Institute of Technology edged St. Lawrence 3-2 in a Liberty League women's soccer game in Rochester Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers, 8-7-0 overall and 5-3-0 in league play, padded their lead on the Saints in the tight race for Liberty League playoff positioning and are now four points up on the Saints with one game to go in the regular season. SLU is 3-2-2 in league play and 6-5-3 overall with a non-league game at home against Potsdam on Tuesday and the final league game of the year against Clarkson, also at home, on Saturday.
The Saints opened the scoring with 6:34 to go in the first half as junior Stephanie Sayward scored her team-leading eighth of the season from Mackenzie Collins.
RIT responded with a pair of goals just over three minutes apart in the second half. Alexa Martinez picked up a pass by Jackie Jacobson which deflected off a Saint defender and fired the ball into the corner of the net at 61:26 and just 3:02 later Jaime Lewandowski fired a shot from 20 yards out which beat Saint keeper Abby van Geldern low to the right side.
The Saints tied it at the 72:13 mark as senior Betsy Lucas scored her second of the season unassisted, but the tie lasted just over a minute as Kiss took the lead pass from Martinez and scored the game winner at 73:30.
Ashley Valenti made two saves to earn the win for the Tigers while van Geldern had eight saves for the Saints. RIT had a 20-7 advantage in overall shots and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
