No. 2 Herons Defeat Saints, 3-0

Oct. 8: Junior Renee Jensen scored two goals to lead nationally-ranked No. 2 William Smith to a 3-0 Liberty League victory over St. Lawrence University at Sandy MacAllaster Field in Canton, NY on Saturday. With the victory, the Herons remain undefeated at 11-0-1 with a 5-0 mark in the conference, while the Saints fall to 5-3-2 and suffer their first league loss of the season (2-1-1).
William Smith, who outshot St. Lawrence 24-7, opened up the scoring at the 10:33 mark in the first half when Jensen knocked her first goal of the season in on pass from senior Jamie Sawyer. Though St. Lawrence senior goalkeeper Abby van Geldern got a good piece of the ball on the challenge, it trickled into the right side of the goal to give the Herons a 1-0 advantage.
Jensen's second goal of the game came at the 55:25 minute mark when first-year teammate Dineo Mmutla found her at the top of the 18-yard box where she fired a shot into the top right of the goal. Junior Whitney Frary rounded out the scoring for William Smith when she capitalized on a penalty kick after being tripped up by van Geldern on a breakaway with 4:30 remaining. She knocked in the free kick low and to the left to complete the scoring as the Herons posted their 11th shutout of the year.
St. Lawrence had several chances in the second half but were unable to solve Williams Smith's goalkeeper Amanda Davis, who earned her eighth shutout of the year as she stopped the two shots she faced. Meanwhile, van Geldern posted 14 saves for the Saints, including some excellent stops to keep her team in the game, though would take the loss.
The Saints will travel to Schenectady, NY on Friday, Oct. 14 to take on Union in a Liberty League match-up. The game is slated for 4:00pm.
