Geneseo State Scores Late to Top Saints, 2-1
Sept. 6: The St. Lawrence University women's soccer team dropped a non-conference contest to Geneseo State, 2-1, on Tuesday night in Geneseo, NY. Senior Elena Rogers tied the game for the Saints in the second half, but Bella Masotti gave the Blue Knights the one-goal win, scoring with a mere 5:07 left in regulation.
Geneseo State (2-1-0) used a 20-5 advantage in shots to put consistent pressure on the Saints' defense. However, St. Lawrence (1-2-0) stayed in the game thanks to outstanding play in net by senior Abby van Geldern, who made nine stops.
The Blue Knights, who outshot the visitors 11-0 in the first half, scored the game's opening goal at 19:53. Bre Glynn sent a direct kick into the box for Shannon Spusta, who headed the ball past van Geldern into the net for a 1-0 advantage.
The Saints would begin to earn several offensive chances in the second half, and would capitalize at 72:02 when Rogers tied the game at 1-1. Sophomore Liz LaPrade sent a pass into the box that skipped past a defender right to Rogers, who scored on Geneseo State goalie Julia Sanger for her second goal of the season.
Though van Geldern made nine saves compared to Sanger's one, Geneseo State was able to score on the St. Lawrence defense in the final minutes to secure the victory. Anne Beinetti got the play started for the Blue Knights in transition, as she sent a ball from the middle to the left side for Masotti, who sent a shot past van Geldern at 84:53. The goal stood as the game-winning goal, propelling the home team to the 2-1 win.
Geneseo State closed with a narrow 4-3 lead in corner kicks, though the Saints had a 2-1 advantage at intermission.
The Scarlet and Brown will be in action again on Saturday, September 10 when the team visits Plattsburgh State at 7:00pm.
