Saints Roll Past Bears, 7-0
Sept. 12: The St. Lawrence University women's soccer team improved to 4-0-1 with a 7-0 victory over SUNY Potsdam on Wednesday afternoon at Maxcy Hall Turf Field in Potsdam, NY. Sophomore forward Nyssa LaClair led the Saints with two goals, both assisted by first-year student Mimi Coppinger, while senior Stephanie Sayward, sophomores Mackenzie Collins and Meghan Ryan, and first-year students Emily DePoy and Hannah Calvelli each added a goal.
"We started the game off a bit slow today, which is to be expected
as it was our first midweek game," said head coach Franco Bari. "While I do have to give credit to Potsdam,
they were disciplined and worked hard for a full 90 minutes and regardless of
the result, they are much improved from years past. Needless to say, we were
very crisp in the second half and really came to life. Our team responded to a
few half time adjustments well and became much more dangerous."
Sayward opened the scoring in the 17th minute of the first half with
her fourth goal of the season on an assist from junior midfielder Julia Friesen. Friesen broke through the back line and sent
a precise pass to Sayward, who placed the ball in the lower corner. Less than a minute later, junior midfielder
Erika Gobielle laid a ball across the 18 to Collins, who drilled a 25 yard shot
over the keeper's head to put the visitors up 2-0. In the 30th minute, Coppinger drove to the end
line and sent the ball across to LaClair scored her first goal of the game to
cap the scoring in the first half.
In the second half, DePoy scored the Saints' fourth of the night when she bent
a corner kick into the top of the net in the 58th minute. Coppinger then recorded her second assist of
the game when she sent a pass through the back line to LaClair, who recorded
her second goal of the game to put the Saints up 5-0. With under ten minutes remaining, sophomore Meagan
Gadzuk-Shea dribbled twenty yards down the line and drove the ball across to
Ryan, who made a slashing run towards the goal to make it 6-0. First-year student Hannah Calvelli capped the
scoring when she headed in a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Holly
Wark.
Sophomore Alexandra Weatherbie earned the shutout victory as she made two saves
for the Saints.
St. Lawrence has a pair of non-conference road games on the
weekend. The Saints battled Nazareth
College on the 15th at 3:00pm before taking on Elmira on the 16th
at 1:00pm.
