Saints, Red Dragons Play to 0-0 Tie in Double-Overtime
Sep. 8: The St. Lawrence University women's soccer team played to a 0-0 double-overtime tie with Cortland State on Saturday night at Holloway Field. The Saints, who kept the Red Dragons (1-0-2) off the board despite being outshot 24-12 in the game, move to 2-0-1 on the season.
"The team played with a lot of
heart today," said head coach Franco Bari. "Cortland is always a strong
opponent and this year certainly was no exception. It was their home opener and they were very
fired up while applying pressure that we were not use to. With that said, we played hard to stay in the
game."
First-year student Kelsey West was impressive in goal for
St. Lawrence as she stopped 12 shots to earn the shutout. Meanwhile, Taylor Hudson made eight saves for
Cortland.
The Saints generated the first chance in the game. Sophomore Mackenzie Collins took a shot from the right side that Hudson denied with a diving save. The Red Dragons had two opportunities in the first half, but junior Samantha Gardner and Emma Whittle sent shots just wide right in the 17th and 35th minutes, respectively.
Cortland controlled much of the play in the second half but couldn't solve West. West stopped another shot by Whittle in the 60th minute with a diving save, and Cailtin Guerra's 25-yard shot was turned aside with a sprawling stop in the 80th minute. The Saints' best chance in the second half came with 1:07 remaining when junior Erika Gobeille put a hard shot on goal that Hudson saved as she charged off her line.
In the first overtime, West denied Kelly Knight with another diving save, sending the ball over the end line. St. Lawrence had one good look in the second extra session but Hudson made a save on junior Julia Friesen's open shot from the center of the box.
The Saints will take on Medaille tomorrow at 3:30 pm in Cortland, NY.
