Hon, MacDonald Push Saints Past Tigers, 1-0
Feb. 11: St. Lawrence University first-year student Jessica Hon scored her fourth goal of the season, while classmate Carmen MacDonald made 31 saves en route to a key 1-0 victory for the Saints' women's hockey team over Princeton University in Princeton, NJ on Saturday afternoon.
The win moves St. Lawrence (19-8-4, 13-5-2) into fourth place in the ECAC Hockey standings, while MacDonald earned her fourth shutout of the year. Meanwhile, the Tigers remain four points behind Quinnipiac in seventh place with a record of 10-13-4 (8-10-2).
"Princeton had us on our heels all night, but we were fortunate to get a quick strike on a nice faceoff win early in the game," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. "We had some great shot blocks and saves down the stretch to preserve the win."
Junior Jamie Goldsmith's faceoff win early in the first period brought the puck back to senior assistant captain Josee Belanger, who fired a shot on Princeton goaltender Rachel Weber. Though Weber made the save, Hon was there to bury the game's only goal at 2:18 of the first period. Both Goldsmith and Belanger earned assists on the goal.
The first proved to be very evenly-matched period with shots at 10-10. However, the Tigers would turn up the offensive pressure on MacDonald, outshooting the visitors 12-6 and 9-1 in the second and third periods, respectively.
MacDonald and her defense did well to keep Princeton off the scoreboard, though, including keeping the home team quiet on the power play (0-for-3). Despite the Tigers' effort with Weber on the bench in the final minutes, the Saints were able to protect their goalie and leave Hobey Baker Rink with a 1-0 victory.
Weber made 16 saves in the loss for Princeton, which held St. Lawrence to a 0-for-2 mark on the power play.
St. Lawrence will finish the 2011-12 regular season next weekend in Central New York with away games at Colgate and Cornell on Friday and Saturday, February 17 and 18. The puck will drop on the Saints and Raiders at 7:00pm at Starr Rink.
