Oct. 3:  The St. Lawrence University women's crew team opened its fall season with a great showing at the Head of the Mohawk Regatta in Niskayuna, NY on Saturday.  The Varsity 8+ came away with a victory over Vassar College, while the novice crew defeated Rensselaer.

"The varsity women have been taking advantage of a squad size depleted by a large study-abroad contingent," said St. Lawrence Head Coach Nick Hughes.  "We've been doing a lot of work in smaller boats and I think it's starting to pay dividends in terms of improved boat feel and technical execution. I think that improvement was evident this weekend."

The Varsity 8+ negotiated the 2.6 mile head race in 14:24, almost 50.0 seconds faster than second place Vassar who finished in 15:07.  The 8+ was stroked by Kathleen Slocum, while Kelly Greenwood was the coxswain.  Also powering the Saints were Jesse Burdett, Jeannine Condon, Britton Weber, Liz Weber, Abbie McIvor, Jenette Kloss and Anna Lavanger.

A novice crew also made its debut, completing the sweep with a victory over Rensselaer.  The 8+, which was stroked by Kat Lukens and coxed by Amy Yao, finished in 16:36 while the Engineers clocked in at 19:11.  Hannah Chanatry, Daniella Stokes , Molly Haskell , Emily Hutchinson, Kelly Bartlett, Ally Friedman  and Helen Aufderheide also powered the boat.

"The conditions on a portion of the course were challenging to say the least," added Coach Hughes. "I'm especially proud of our novice women, who handled the rough water with a maturity well beyond their years. They had some nice swing and posted a great result. Those young women have a lot of promise."

Two Fours also participated in the regatta, topping both Rensselaer and Schenectady County.  The first four negotiated the course in 16:22, while the second four finished 17.0 seconds behind at 16:39.  Rensselaer and Schenectady County finished in 16:54 and 17:53, respectively.   Comprising the first four were Britton Weber at stroke, Tori Vossler as coxswain, Kathleen Slocum, Jenette Kloss and Anna Lavanger.  The second four was stroked by Jesse Burdett, while Kelly Greenwood was coxswain.  Jeannine Condon, Liz Weber and Abbie McIvor also powered the boat.

The Saints will battle Hamilton on Saturday, Oct. 8 in Clinton, NY.
