Saints Post Impressive Finishes at Head of the Fish

Oct. 28: The St. Lawrence University women's crew team had four solid finishes in its races at the 2012 Head of the Fish in Saratoga, NY. The novice 8+ and 4+ each were third in their respective events, while the varsity 8+ finished sixth against some outstanding competition.

The varsity 8+ raced in 12:16.41, good for sixth out of 20 boats and less than two seconds behind WPI in fifth. Senior Madeline Fones stroked the Saints' 8+, while classmate Kelly Greenwood was the coxswain. St. Lawrence was also represented by Leah Ruggiero, Kelly Bartlett, Alissa McCaffrey, Emily Hutchinson, Margaret Fellows, Sally Dankner and Jessica Burdett.

The novice 8+ was third overall in its event behind only Williams and Wesleyan, while finishing comfortably ahead of fourth place William Smith. Yuki McQueeny was the coxswain and Jen Longwell stroked the boat, which was comprised of Katie Legnard, Ellie Jones, Gabby Schreffler, Cadence Trapini, Rose Dowley, Karen Blakelock and Hannah Durant.

The Saints' novice 4+ was also third of 17 teams behind UMass and Williams with a time of 15:08.11, finishing ahead of Colgate University. McQueeney was the coxswain, while the boat was comprised of Schreffler, Marilena Zeprun, Ann West and Grace Conrad. Meanwhile, the varsity 4+ picked up an eighth place showing in its race out of 33 boats, though the squad was just two seconds out of fifth place. Amy Yao, Jesse Burdett, Sally Dankner, Maggie Fellow and Maddy Fones rowed for the Scarlet and Brown.

The St. Lawrence women's crew team will continue training throughout the winter for the spring portion of its schedule, which gets underway on March 16 at the Mayor's Cup in Tampa, FL.
