Women’s 8+s Sweep at Bridge-to-Bridge Race

Oct. 8: The St. Lawrence University women's crew team began its 2012-13 season in style on Saturday, as the Saints' eights swept at the Bridge-to-Bridge Race in Rome, NY.

St. Lawrence's varsity 8+ topped both Hamilton's "A" and Colgate with a time of 24:54.5. Meanwhile, the Saints' Novice 8+ also had a great race, as its time of 26:15.9 won the novice race but also placed the group ahead of Hamilton's second varsity boat.

"After this weekend's results, both Coach Hughes and I are very excited about the potential this class of novices brings to our program," said St. Lawrence assistant rowing coach Amanda Dudley. "These women have already made great progress over their first month in collegiate rowing and collectively possess a great attitude and work ethic that will pay them dividends not only throughout the rest of the fall season, but into winter training and spring racing as well. They are capable of continuing the improvement of both their fitness and technical skills in the coming weeks, and we have high hopes for them at our upcoming regattas."

The varsity 8+ was stroked by Maddy Fones, while Kelly Greenwood was coxswain. Other rowers include Leah Ruggiero, Kelly Bartlett, Alissa McCaffrey, Emily Hutchinson, Maggie Fellows, Sally Dankner and Jesse Burdett. The novice 8+ was comprised of Katie Legnard, Gabby Schreffler, Ellie Jones, Karen Blakelock, Rose Dowley, Cadence Trapini, Hannah Durant, Jen Longwell and coxswain Amy Yao.

In the women's fours, St. Lawrence's "A" boat was edged by Hamilton by .9 seconds, finishing in 27:15.0. That team was comprised Greenwood, Fones, McCaffrey, Bartlett and Burdett while the "B" boat, which was fifth overall, included Yao, Dankner, Fellows, Hutchinson and Ruggiero. The novice four included Manon Edeline, Marilena Zeprun, Ann West, Grace Conrad and Longwell.

The Saints are scheduled to compete against on Saturday, October 13 at the Head of the Genessee in Rochester, NY.
