Legg, Saints Roll Past Brewers, 81-60
Jan. 11: The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team used balanced scoring to down Liberty League foe Vassar College by the score of 81-60 on Friday night in the Burkman Gymnasium. The Saints, led by junior Kelly Legg's game-high 22 points, used an 11-0 run over a span of three minutes in the second half to build a substantial advantage that they would not relinquish.
The Saints (8-3, 2-0) dominated the Brewers off the dribble, owning a 50-26 advantage in points in the paint en route to their seventh straight victory. Meanwhile, Vassar was led by junior Cydni Matsuoka's 20 points and dropped just its second game of the season to move to 8-2 and 1-1 in the conference.
Legg shot 9-for-13 from the floor, and added seven rebounds and a block, while sophomore Ally Cady and junior Hannah Wilson joined her in double-figures scoring. Cady tallied 14 points and dished out seven assists with four steals, while Wilson provided a spark off the bench for the Saints in the second half as she scored nine of her 11 total points. Sophomore Kara McDuffee scored nine points, a game-high 11 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and two steals.
St. Lawrence and Vassar exchanged leads several times in the early going until the Saints used a 12-2 run midway through the first half to take a 26-15 lead. The home team shot 50% from the floor in the first stanza, but Matsuoka and the Brewers cut into the double-figure deficit, bringing the score to 39-32 at the intermission.
In the second half, the Saints used an 11-0 run over a span of three minutes around the 16:00 mark to build an advantage that the Brewers were unable to overcome. Vassar did not come closer than within 16 points for the remainder of the game.
St. Lawrence forced 23 Vassar turnovers that resulted in 22 points, while limiting its own to 13. The Brewers, however, outrebounded the Saints 46-38.
St. Lawrence will host Bard College at 2:00 pm in the Burkman Gymnasium.
